First case of coronavirus identified in Addison County

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center on Wednesday morning announced the first case of coronavirus in Addison County.
Tom Thompson, Porter’s Interim President and COO, announced the Vermont Department of Health told Porter that an individual in the community has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. COVID-19 is the name of the disease caused by coronavirus.
The patient was screened via telemedicine, tested via the new “PMC Drive Through Testing” service and sent home to self-isolate per CDC guidelines, Thompson said in an announcement on the Porter/UVM Health Network website.
Public health officials followed the standard procedure: upon receiving the positive test result, the patient’s health care provider notified the individual. The patient agreed to remain at home per clinical guidelines; and the Department of Health will continue monitoring.
“Our emergency response plans are in place, and our (Porter Medical Center) team has been working to deliver the best care possible for our hospital and PMG patients and our Helen Porter residents, while limiting staff exposure to the virus,” Thompson said.
“Porter Medical Center is working diligently to prepare in order to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic,” he continued. “Two weeks ago, PMC stood up a command center to direct our organization’s response. I want to recognize our PMC team of professionals, who are steadfast and deeply committed to assuring that our patients and community receive the best care possible.
“Thank you all for your hard work and commitment to our community as we continue to work together through these challenging times.”
