Girls’ basketball teams win in home stretch
ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school girls’ basketball action earlier this week, Middlebury, Vergennes and Mount Abraham all picked up victories.
Otter Valley (7-11) was scheduled to play at Springfield on Tuesday. No information was available on that game. OV will wrap up by hosting Woodstock on Thursday, and it looks like the Otters will be the No. 10 seed in Division III.
The teams will play their final regular season games this week, and the Vermont Principals’ Association will announce playoff pairings on Monday morning.
TIGERS
On Monday the Tigers defeated host Milton, 44-27. Two freshmen paced MUHS, Ele Sellers with 17 points and eight rebounds and Cady Pitner with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The 5-14 Tigers wrap up by visiting Mount Mansfield on Thursday. They could be seeded as high as No. 13 in D-II.
COMMODORES
On Monday the Commodores held off a late surge by host Winooski to prevail, 48-42, clinching a home D-III playoff game for VUHS. Two late free throws apiece by Emily Rooney and Kate Gosliga sealed the victory. Rooney and Felicia Poirier led the Commodores with 12 points each.
The 11-8 Commodores, winners of three straight, finish with a Thursday visit to Colchester. Monday’s victory nailed down at least the No. 7 seed in D-III, but the Commodores will have to win on Thursday and hope other teams lose twice to move higher.
EAGLES
On Monday the Eagles topped host Missisquoi, 48-41, for their seventh straight victory. Mount Abe had a double-digit lead before the 4-14 T-Birds made it closer in the final minutes.
Chloe Johnston scored 24 points and added five assists and eight steals for the Eagles, and Abby Reen chipped in eight points as the Eagles improved to 14-5.
The Eagles are battling for the Nos. 4-6 seeds in D-II with North Country and Burr & Burton. They will visit second-place Enosburg on Thursday.
