More Light: Small works at NoDa gallery

VERGENNES — Northern Daughters will host its fourth annual small works exhibit, “more light,” at the gallery’s 221 Main Street location in Vergennes beginning this Friday, Nov. 22. The show features all new works from Bonnie Baird, Brenda Myrick, Anne Cady, Hannah Sessions, Pamela Smith and Reid Brechner in a range of media, including English porcelain, watercolor and oil painting. There will be an opening reception on Friday from 5-8 p.m., where there will be live music from Casey Burger and Mike Walker, wine and Daily Chocolate pairings, and other comestibles for all.
“more light” is the debut show at Northern Daughters for Reid Brechner and Brenda Myrick. Brechner’s work is created on slab built English porcelain blocks. He uses mark making, texture, glazes, resists and a wide variety of technical variation to create subdued abstracts, that are exhibited in small compositions. Myrick has recently moved into abstract painting, with a reference to coastal scapes, evoking the energy of waves on a rocky shore.
Smith is exhibiting small pieces that feel like windows into her larger work. Her paintings are rich in patterns and floral elements, and exhibit the liberty experienced by an outsider artist who plays with perspectives, dimensions and mediums freely. Cady’s work is characterized by luminous saturated color, simplified forms and strongly contrasting values depicting the open pastures, farms, hills and mountains of the Champlain valley. Baird and Sessions’ small works, in oil on panel, depict the Vermont landscape with more natural and muted tones and the loving familiarity of a farmer.
As the longest night of the year approaches (Dec. 21), it has become a tradition at NoDa to exhibit small works and celebrate the small moments of beauty that bring joy and light. The exhibit will remain on view through Dec. 28.
