Women’s soccer ties visiting Hamilton
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie with visiting NESCAC foe Hamilton (3-2-1, 1-2-1) on Saturday. The Panthers will carry a 5-0-1, 2-0-1 NESCAC, record into another home game this coming Saturday at 11 a.m. vs. league opponent Connecticut.
The Panthers had the first chance, but Hamilton goalkeeper Rachel Pike smothered a cross from Panther Olivia Miller.
Hamilton’s Hyla Mosher struck at 18:48. Caroline Dawson sent a cross in from the left side. Panther keeper Ursula Alwang got of piece of the ball, but it dropped to Mosher, who knocked it in from point-blank range.
Middlebury nearly tied the game in the 35th minute, but Pike dove to deny Sabrina Glaser’s shot from close range.
The Panthers’ Simone Ameer knotted the game with 2:51 remaining in the half. The Continentals attempted to play a long ball back to Pike, but Ameer won a race and one-touched the ball around Pike, leaving an open net for Ameer to knock in her team-high fourth goal of the fall.
Ameer nearly struck again with 30 seconds until the break, but missed just wide from 17 yards out.
There were few scoring chances in the second half. Hamilton’s best look came in the 65th minute when Aidan Leahey fed Mosher, but she shot high from the 18. With two minutes left in the game Pike knocked down a Virginia Charman shot on a feed from Elise Morris.
Three minutes into the first overtime, Gretchen McGrath had a chance from 12 yards out, but McGrath did not get all of the shot and it rolled to Pike. In the 96th minute Eliza Van Voorhis’s hard shot from the left side following a corner kick went right to Pike. In the second extra session, Alwang tipped a Mosher header over the crossbar.
Middlebury finished with a 13-10 edge in shots. Alwang made four saves, and Pike finished with eight stops.
