Poetry: I’m Ashamed

June 11, 2020

I am ashamed at what has been happening in our nation lately, disregard for human life, property and safety.   I am ashamed at being born white, living in an affluent community, attending a proper New England boarding school, attending an Ivy League University.   I am ashamed, as a child of the 50s, that my father had a black yard man he called “boy,” our neighbors had a black maid who lived in their attic and I thought nothing of it.   I am ashamed that at school every morning I recited the Pledge of Alleg … (read more)

May 28, 2020

MIDDLEBURY —  Miriam Hardy has spent the majority of her 84 years writing poetry. Like her great-aunt and her mom before her, Hardy has enjoyed writing odes to people, places and things that inspire her. But her world has shrunk considerably since the cor … (read more)

Addison County residents are likely used to seeing
Addison County residents are likely used to seeing corn growing in local fields, as the crop is a popular one often used by farmers to feed their livestock. While many local farms continue to grow corn and other well-known forage crops for their animals, some have shifted to another option — sorghum sudangrass.

UVM Extension officials note the annual grass crop is drought-resistant and can provide a resilient option for farmers’ forage systems. Sorghum sudangrass was the focus of a recent farmer roundtable hosted by the Middlebury Extension Office, where local farmers gathered to discuss how the crop has performed at their operations. It was ground and pound for the top-seeded Middlebury Union High School football team in Saturday night’s Division I final against No. 2 St. Johnsbury on South Burlington High’s turf field - and the Tigers took home the crown.

The team crafted their 13-7 victory by running for 265 yards on 51 attempts, using tough defense to limit the Hilltoppers to four yards rushing and a net 144 yards passing, and staving off a late St. Johnsbury rally with an interception followed by a game-clinching 4th-down run.

The Tigers finished 10-1, earned the program’s 15th championship, and completed the program’s 17th straight winning season.

Society is always looking for ways to show appreci
Society is always looking for ways to show appreciation to its veterans, who are at times asked to put themselves in harm’s way to ensure the safety and freedom of others. Among the private groups that support veterans is one that has spent the past 22 years stitching together fantastic fabric creations designed to metaphorically and literally impart warmth to the nation’s veterans. The group is called “Quilts of Valor,” a national organization of avid craftspeople who each year make hundreds of quilts that are then given to those who served (or who continue to do so).

Representatives of Quilts of Valor and Ferrisburgh’s Patriotic Spirits turned out at the Middlebury Quilt Show last month to drape seven area veterans (and one from Maine) in fabric finery featuring stars, stripes, red, white, blue, deer, soldier silhouettes and other “wow” factors.
