Girls' hoop wrap: Eagles, Tigers earn victories

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham and Middlebury rolled to wins to highlight local high school girls’ basketball action, all on Tuesday. In other games, Vergennes and Otter Valley came up short.

Teams will play their final regular-season games at the end of this week, and the Vermont Principals’ Association will release playoff pairings on Monday. MUHS in Division I and VUHS and OV in D-II will play on the road in the playoffs, but the Eagles are in line for two D-II home games.

Tiger girls' hockey upsets Rice on the road

SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team upset host Rice on Monday, 2-1, snapping a 1-1 tie in the third period.

Meredith Kimble’s power-play strike 4:38 into the final period proved to be the difference as the Tigers improved to 6-11 by knocking off the 12-5 Green Knights.

Taylor Moulton scored the Tigers’ first goal, and goalie Abby Hodsden stopped 19 shots for the Tigers.

Kylie Corley scored and goalie Becca Tudor made 14 saves for Rice.

Wrestlers to seek Vermont podium this weekend

BRANDON — A number of wrestlers from Mount Abraham, Otter Valley, Middlebury and Vergennes union high schools should stand on the podium at the conclusion or the state championship wrestling meet, which OVUHS will host on Friday and Saturday.

Official seeds were not available before deadline, but according to Feb. 15 coaches’ polling at vermontwrestler.com, 13 wrestlers from the four local high schools are ranked in the top five in their weight classes.

Women's hockey to host playoffs after e victory and a tie

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team concluded its regular season and nailed down the top seed for the NESCAC tournament with a win and a tie vs. visiting league foe Williams (10-7-7, 4-6-6) this past weekend.

The Panthers, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division III with a 17-4-3 record that includes a 13-1-2 NESCAC record, will host No. 8 Wesleyan (6-14-4, 2-10-4 NESCAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Otters earn road win to highlight boys' basketball

ADDISON COUNTY — In area high school boys’ basketball play earlier this week Otter Valley picked up a key road win, but Mount Abraham and Vergennes fell short. Middlebury was idle.

The Otters steadily pulled away throughout to defeat host Hartford, 55-31, and avenge an early-season loss to the Hurricanes. Payson Williams’ 15 points led a balanced scoring effort for OV, which won for the fifth time in six outings and improved to 11-7.

Tiger Nordic wins state tune-up

RIPTON — The Middlebury Union High School Nordic teams tuned up for the Division II championship races by sweeping two classic-style events on Saturday, Feb. 16, on their home course, Middlebury College’s Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton.

The Tiger boys, with senior Sam Hodges leading a sweep of the top three places, coasted to a win over second-place BFA-St. Albans, 12-41, with Essex (65), St. Johnsbury (66), Burlington (111) and Champlain Valley rounding out the field.

Panthers ski to third at Williams carnival

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Middlebury College ski team finished third at the Williams Carnival this past weekend, an effort highlighted by wins from junior Sam Wood and the men’s Nordic team in the 10K, and second-place efforts by the men’s alpine and women’s Nordic squads. Dartmouth won with 990 points, followed by Vermont (910) and the Panthers (756). Nordic races were held at the Berkshire East Ski Resort, while the alpine races took place at Jiminy Peak.

Men's hoop falls in NESCAC quarterfinal

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Fourth-seed Wesleyan eliminated the No. 5 Middlebury men’s basketball team from the NESCAC tournament on Saturday, 73-65.

The Panthers, who had been ranked as high as No. 2 in NCAA Division III this winter, lost for the third straight time and fell to 19-6. They must now hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament when the field is announced on Monday.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball celebrated its Senior Day in style on Saturday, thumping visiting Mount Mansfield by the misleading final of 78-39.

When is a 39-point margin misleading?

When the Eagle starters in the game in the first and third quarters Mount Abe outscore the 7-11 Cougars by 52-12 and force 21 turnovers with relentless defensive pressure, both full-court and half-court. And in each of those quarters all five Eagle starters record points.
