ELLEN G. YOUNG

SHOREHAM — Ellen G. Young, 88, a lifelong resident of Shoreham, died at her home Wednesday afternoon June 28, 2017.

She was born September 10, 1928, in Shoreham, the daughter of Joseph and Ada (Hickory) Burgess.

Ellen was a graduate of Newton Academy and Castleton Normal School for Teachers.

She was proud of being a lifelong resident of Shoreham. Ellen enjoyed oil painting, being involved in community events, teaching Sunday school and loved children.

SUSAN L. LEWIS

MIDDLEBURY — Susan Lockwood Lewis, 80, died peacefully Friday evening June 23, 2017, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born September 13, 1936 in Bridgeport, Conn., the daughter of John and Virginia (Kerr) Lockwood.

Susan was a history major at Middlebury College and graduated in the class of 1958, where she met her husband of 59 years, John Lewis, Jr. They settled in Middlebury and raised four children, eventually moving to Salisbury so that she could have chickens, ducks and horses. Her favorite horse was a three quarter Morgan named Velvet.

A grave-side service for Claude J. LaBerge, who died February 26, 2017, will be held July 8, at 11 a.m. at Prospect Cemetery on Route 22A in Vergennes.

FRANCIS ARTHUR WATERMAN

FERRISBURGH — Francis Arthur Waterman, 75, passed away peacefully in his home the evening of June 26, 2017, after a battle with Alzheimer’s, surrounded by family. Fran was a loving husband, father, brother and papa.

He leaves his wife, Louise; his son, Ben and wife Catie; his daughter Katie and husband Nick; his son Bigs and wife Jen; his son Pat; his daughter Emme; and his seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by sister Susan and many other close friends and family.

WEST ADDISON — Mary E. (Fisher) Sleeper, 77, of West Addison, passed away peacefully at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center on June 23, 2017, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with Dementia

BRISTOL — Paul A. Murray, 81, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2017, at his home in Bristol.

He was born January 17, 1936 in Middlebury, the son of Kenneth and Rena (Whittemore) Murray.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Paul is survived by three children Samuel Murray, Todd Murray and Rebecca Murray; his sisters Shirley Dwyer of Bristol, Patricia Austin of Vergennes, Molly Flagg of Massena, N.Y., and Nancy Abbott; and his brother Kenneth Robert Murray of East Middlebury.

DORIS LEBEAU O'BRIEN

VERGENNES — Doris LeBeau-O’Brien passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017 at the home of Sylvia Hallock with her family by her side.

Daughter of the late Arthur and Marjorie LeBeau, she was preceded in death by her husband Phil O’Brien I; her son and daughter-in-law, Philip J. II and Brenda; her brothers Robert and Paul; and her sister Carol Rivers.

RUSSELL L. GIARD

BRIDPORT — Russell L. Giard, 83, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 22, 2017, in his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Bridport on Sept 20, 1933, the son of the late Victor and Marguerite Giard. He was a Lineman, and worked for Cartmell Sales and Service until he went out on his own doing refrigeration and service until he retired. He loved to camp, fish and hunt with his family.

WILTON WARNER COVEY

MIDDLEBURY — Wilton Warner “Bud” Covey, M.D., passed away on June 21, 2017. Born on December 22, 1919, Bud was raised in Manchester, N.H. As a child, he spent many summers with his grandparents in Brattleboro. It was there that he met Marjorie Louise Dix, whom he courted and eventually married on June 16, 1944. They shared 69 wonderful years of marriage before Marge passed away in 2013, just short of her 94th birthday.

JANICE MARILYN ARMELL

CHARLOTTE — Janice M. Armell, 80, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017, at her home in Charlotte.

She was born on January 1, 1937 in Claremont, N.H. Janice was the daughter of Ralph and Madelyn (Gregory) Watson.

She worked for many years at Eating Well Magazine in Charlotte, and enjoyed reading, knitting, bird watching, trips to the ocean and spending time with her family.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
