Stanislaw E. Pietkiewicz

BRISTOL — Stanislaw E. Pietkiewicz, 92, attended by his wife, passed away peacefully at home on April 6, 2018, after a short illness. Son of Edward and Katarzyna (Lakawa) Pietkiewicz, he grew up in New Bedford, MA.

Carol Pearson Lewis

WILLISTON — Carol Pearson Lewis, 77, passed away in her sleep on the night of Monday, April 2, 2018. She was born Nov. 3, 1940. She grew up on a farm in New Haven, Vt., and began making dear friends. She left the farm and graduated from Champlain College, where she met and married Donald Lewis. They raised two sons, Ken and Tim, in Shelburne.

Barbara M. Fitz-Gerald

WALTHAM — Barbara M. Fitz-Gerald, 86, died Monday, April 9, 2018 at the Myrick Care Home in Bristol.

She was born Sept. 15, 1931 in Newport, Vt., the daughter of Ralph E. and Ada Alberta (Gage) Reed. Barbara spent the summers growing up in Shaftsbury on her grandparent’s farm, which was a very important part of her life.

She was a graduate of Essex Junction High School class of 1948 and the University of Vermont with a Bachelors Degree.

Louis Breo

EVANSVILLE, Tenn. — Louis Breo, formerly of Middlebury, died unexpectedly of natural causes on April 9, 2018. He was living in Evansville, Tenn., when he passed. He leaves his siblings in Florida and Virginia and many friendships he created in his travels. He served in the U.S. Navy. 

JOEL A. FIFIELD

MIDDLEBURY — Joel A. Fifield, 84, a lifetime farmer of Border Acres, died early Saturday morning, March 31, 2018, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury, Vt., surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Sept. 2, 1933, in Randolph, Vt., the son of Joel A. Fifield and Evelyn Morse (Cowles) Fifield. Joel served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 in Germany during and after the Korean War. On Aug. 17, 1957, he married Rebecca June Orvis in the Baptist Church in Bristol, Vt.

Rene C. Smith

FERRISBURGH — Rene C. Smith, 66, of Sand Road passed away at the UVM Medical Center on March 24, 2018. She was born on January 4, 1952 in Norwalk Conn., the eldest daughter of five children born to the late Frank and Patricia Ives of Moriah, N.Y.

Rene was predeceased by her husband Chris Smith on October 20, 2017. They met at Goodrich and were married September 16, 1989. Traveling together was one of their great joys, along with watching their beloved New York Yankees.

SHOREHAM — Gloria Grace Rader, 92, died peacefully April 1, 2018 at her home at The Residence at Otter Creek in Middlebury, Vt. She was surrounded by family and friends. Born July 25, in College Point, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Frances Henrietta Renart and Thomas Louis Garrett.

Deborah Ann Gaboriault

VERGENNES — Deborah Ann Gaboriault (Morris), 65, of Vergennes, passed peacefully after a brief illness at the University of Vermont Medical Center on Sunday, April 1, 2018, surrounded by family. Deb was born on May 31, 1952, the daughter of the late Raymond and Jesse (Pierce) Morris. On August 12, 1978, Deb married Randall Gaboriault. Together they remained for the duration of their time together and raised their son Lee.

Submitting an obituary

The Addison Independent publishes paid obituaries and free notices of passing. Paid obituaries cost 25-cents per word, and $10 per photo. The obituary will publish as it is submitted on the date of the family’s choosing.

For those who do not wish to purchase an obituary, the Addison Independent offers anyone with a local connection the opportunity to publish a notice of passing. These notices may be up to 100 words and are subject to editing by our news department.

Submissions must be received by 11 a.m. on Wednesday for publication in the Thursday paper and 11 a.m. on Friday for Monday’s paper.

Generally, obituaries follow this form:
TOWN — Name, age, of town, died on date, of cause of death. He/She was born on date in town, the son/daughter of father's name and mother's name, including maiden name in parentheses.

Then include a paragraph or two about where the person went to school and what they did for work; where they lived, who they married and when.

Add a sentence or two about what made the person special to family and friends, including hobbies, avocations or other telling details about their life.

He/She is survived by spouse's name; children named individually (and their spouses and towns of residence, if appropriate); siblings named individually; number of grandchildren, parents or other immediate family members.

He/She was predeceased by names of immediate family members.

A memorial service will be held (fill in details of date, time, and place, plus officiate if applicable) with interment at (place). Memorial contributions may be made to (name and complete address, if applicable).
