Crow communication is 'cawfully' complicated

By Joe Rankin

The Outside Story crows.jpg

“Caw! Caw!” Every spring we hear it. And my wife says, “that’s My Crow.” It’s apparently the bird’s name. She capitalizes it in her tone. I think she hasn’t bestowed a more formal name because she doesn’t know whether it’s a male or female.

My Crow is likely part of an extended family of crows that lives in our area. We think they nest in the tall pines on our south neighbor’s woodlot, but they forage over our woods and fields as well.

Now is the time to take down bird feeders

Posted on March 24, 2016 |
By Addison Independent

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says warm spring weather and melting snows are causing bears to come out of their winter dens early in search of a meal. The department recommends taking down bird feeders now to avoid attracting them.

Bears are very fond of suet and bird seed, especially black oil sunflower seed. Bringing feeders in at night doesn’t work, because bears will still feed on seed that is spilled on the ground.

MIDDLEBURY — Less than a week before it convenes its annual meeting on March 30, Porter Medical Center has pushed the proverbial reset button on its top executive position and on a new compensation plan for providers. PMC officials are also searching for more stability in the institution’s operating budget, which each year is thrown a financial life preserver through a federal drug subsidy program.

Blazing the way: Monkton farm couple pioneers cheesemaking niche

Orb Weaver LEAD PHOTO marjorie.jpg

In the cold Vermont darkness, Marjorie Susman and Marian Pollack slide into endlessly pocketed Carhartt pants and tall muck boots. It is February, and though the snow is gone, the earth is hard when they step out of their small farmhouse. Their breath hangs in faint wisps before disappearing in the early morning air. It is 5:30 a.m.

Pollack, 68, heads to the barn to milk their six Jersey cows, Clover, Hershey, Kudo, Pookah, Slinky and Bounty. Her boxy body moves briskly, gray shorn hair standing on end.
