No contested races on Monkton ballot

MONKTON — There will be no contested races in Monkton on Town Meeting Day.

On the selectboard, Selectman Roger Parker is running again for a three-year seat, and incumbent Henry Boisse is running again for a two-year seat.

All candidates for the Monkton Central School board are also unchallenged incumbents. Robert Radler is up for a three-year term; and both Marikate Kelley and Sarah Rougier are running again for one-year terms.

Lincoln Library plans February events

LINCOLN — Lincoln Library has planned a slate of programs and workshops for the month of February that are targeted at both children and adults.

An adult coloring program, titled “Color Your World,” is on Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 1-2 p.m. A selection of colored pencils will be available, or participants may bring their own. Cynthia Kling will lead this fun and informative event. She will talk a bit about color and the color wheel and then distribute pages for people to color.

New season on tap for community chorus

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College Community Chorus announces a new season to prepare for its annual spring concert, slated for performance on campus on the afternoon of Mother’s Day, May 8. Regular rehearsals are Tuesday and Sunday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. in Mead Chapel, beginning Feb. 16.

New' Beeman school building celebrates diamond anniverary

NEW HAVEN — This year marks the 75th anniversary of the “new” Beeman school building, which is located on North Street in New Haven village.

Beeman Academy opened in the fall of 1870. It was incorporated into the town school system in 1894, and finally leased to the New Haven school district in 1912. That same year, it was extensively renovated and expanded.

Sadly, on Oct. 28, 1940, the venerable Beeman Academy burned to the ground.

St. Stephen's invites all to Taizé services from France

MIDDLEBURY — St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury will offer a series of Lenten services inspired by the beautiful, chant-like music of the Taizé Community, an ecumenical, multicultural monastery in France.

All are invited to attend.

All services will be on Wednesday evenings, from Feb. 17 through March 16, starting at 7 p.m.

Community Players to stage two one-act comedies

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Community Players present two one-act comedies, Peter Shaffer’s “Black Comedy” and Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Inspector Hound,” at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury from Feb. 11 to 14. Thursday through Saturday shows are at 8 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

Man jailed again, this time on stalking charge

SALISBURY — A man charged with threatening employees with a gun at a Leicester scrap yard two weeks ago was arrested on Feb. 4 after violating an unrelated “no stalking” order in Salisbury.

Vermont State Police arrested Kadia Barenbaum, 56, of East Middlebury after responding to a trespassing complaint on Shard Villa Road in Salisbury just before noon this past Thursday.

Tari Shattuck grants boost five-town elementary schools

BRISTOL — The Tari Shattuck Educational Foundation of Bristol recently funded nine projects in the elementary schools of Addison Northeast Supervisory Union to support innovative educational opportunities developed by local teachers. This school year, as part of its support of excellence in teaching and learning in ANeSU, the foundation is granting up to $1,000 for projects to each of the ANeSU elementary schools.

BRISTOL — Jacquie Werner-Gavrin, founder and director of the Red Cedar School in Bristol, has been nominated for the 2015-2016 national LifeChanger of the Year award.

Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, the LifeChanger of the Year program recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 public and private school educators and employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.

Estimates call for lower school taxes in most ANwSU towns

VERGENNES — Residential school tax rates are now expected to drop in four out of five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union communities, according to new estimates released this week by ANwSU officials.

They revised their estimates — which are lower than those published in ANwSU annual town reports — after the Legislature agreed late in January to make changes to school-funding provisions in Act 46, Vermont’s new education law that also promotes school consolidation.
