Brandon rallies around family made homeless by fire

BRANDON — One week after a fire destroyed all they own, the Mahoney family of Brandon is staying upbeat, grateful to their community, and grateful for their lives.

“It’s humbling,” Mike Mahoney said in a phone interview Monday. “It’s been hard, but we just want to thank the community and the outlying area. Everyone’s just been wonderful.”

Brandon picks Maine woman as its new town manager

BRANDON — Robin Bennett has signed a three-year contract as Brandon’s new town manager and will start work Sept. 9.

The move comes five months after Brandon was left without a town manager when Keith Arlund resigned with two weeks’ notice after seven years on the job.

Jay Craven's film 'Northern Borders' to screen locally at four venues

ADDISON COUNTY — Award-winning Vermont director Jay Craven will present his new film, “Northern Borders,” at  special screenings, Friday, Sept. 6, at the Brandon Town Hall; Friday, Sept. 13, at the Vergennes Opera House; Saturday, Sept. 14, at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater; and Sunday, Sept. 15, at Holley Hall in Bristol. Show times are 7:30 p.m. The film is based on the award-winning novel by Vermont writer Howard Frank Mosher.

WVTK radio personality Bruce Zeman and his dog are off the air

MIDDLEBURY — Bruce Zeman and Hobbes, his trusty dachshund sidekick, made their final sign-off on the Middlebury-based radio station 92.1 WVTK-FM this past Friday, Aug. 30.

The duo became very popular with their morning show, “Wake-Up Crew with Bruce and Hobbes,” featuring in part interviews with local public officials, civic leaders and entertainers. Hobbes, a rescued dog, was Zeman’s constant companion at the station and on remote broadcasts and public appearances.

Bristol selectboard tweaks town tax rate

BRISTOL — Action taken by the Bristol selectboard Monday evening will result in a small increase in the town tax rate — a very small increase.

The selectboard raised the rate by $0.0024, or less than a quarter of a penny. That amounts to $4.80 on a home valued at $200,000.

This was the second time this summer that the selectboard had to revise the tax rate. The original revision last month concerned a pending evaluation by the state on a Bristol property’s taxes, which was not a factor in the most recent revision, Town Clerk Therese Kirby said.

Town land sale could aid expansion of Middlebury gallery
