Mount Abe hires U-32 leader as principal

BRISTOL — Jessica Barewicz, one of two assistant principals at U-32 Middle and High School in East Montpelier, has been selected as the next Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School principal. She will begin her tenure July 1.

Although, as is typical, salary and contract details remain to be worked out, Interim Superintendent Armando Vilaseca said the Mount Abraham board was pleased with the hire.

Middlebury police suspect stabbing was self-inflicted

MIDDLEBURY — Local police in Middlebury are investigating a stabbing incident at a Monroe Street home early Tuesday morning. Their preliminary investigation suggested that the stab wounds were self-inflicted.

Middlebury police were called to the residence at 6:45 a.m. on March 22. Upon arrival, they found a male in the home with several stab wounds in the abdomen. Middlebury Regional EMS took the male to Porter Hospital, and he was subsequently transported to UVM Medical Center in Burlington for further treatment, police said.

Fire on Friday claimed a Route 22A home in Bridport

BRIDPORT — Investigators are still sorting out the cause of a fire this past Friday in Bridport that caused significant damage to a Route 22A home owned by Mark and Heidi Prime.

It was at around 5:30 p.m. on March 18 that Bridport firefighters were toned out to the fire, according to Assistant Fire Chief Chris Gordon. The fire originated in the attic of the two-story home and burned very hot, due in part to cedar shingles on the roof that held the heat inside the structure, according to Gordon.

Bristol couple charged under 'crack house' law

BRISTOL — Federal and state law enforcement authorities are investigating two Bristol residents’ involvement in alleged heroin trafficking, kidnapping and assault.

The investigation and federal charges against Corrin Laraway, 22, and Justin Stone, 24, follow a 911 call this past Saturday morning from a man who had apparently been storing drugs at their apartment and whom first responders found in the pre-dawn hours injured by the side of Notch Road in Lincoln.

Brodie to take charge as principal of Ferrisburgh Central School

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Central School board on Thursday chose to offer a principal’s contract to a current Burlington middle-school language teacher who has three years of experience as an assistant middle school principal and seven years of experience as an elementary school board member.

Edmunds Middle School French and Spanish teacher Beth Brodie and Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent JoAn Canning began discussing contract details immediately for Brodie to take over as the new educational leader at Ferrisburgh Central this summer.

Habitat for Humanity dedicates its newest home

MIDDLEBURY — Habitat for Humanity of Addison County celebrated the completion of its eighth home at a dedication ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 13. The cold weather was no match for the warmth inside as new homeowner Karen Holbrook, together with her three children, thanked all those who worked so hard to help her reach this goal. Attending the event were many friends and family members, as well as Habitat volunteer builders and board members.

Beauchemin wins speech competition

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College Advancement hosted the Vermont American Legion Oratorical Speech Finals on Saturday, Mar. 5. Representing District 1 was Alyse Beauchemin, a junior at Vergennes Union High School; District 4, Charlie Cacciatore, a senior at Fair Haven Union High School; and District 5, Mateo Ellerson of Hartford High School. The students had reached this level by first competing at their sponsoring American Legion post and winning their respective district competitions to earn a place in the March 5 finals.
