Bristol residents decry loss of South Street bridge

Brandon community promoter Bette Moffett dead at 89

BRANDON — A light has gone out in Brandon.

Community lover, friend and local treasure Bette Moffett died at home on Sept. 11 at the age of 89.

Bette inhabited the idea of community spirit. Her love of Brandon and its residents was boundless, as evidenced by her tireless efforts to support, enhance and promote the place she called home since 1968.

A Service of Celebration to honor her life with music and memories was scheduled held at the Brandon Inn on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.

Brandon chef recieves top Vermont honors

BRANDON — Chef Robert Barral, executive chef/owner of Café Provence in Brandon, has been selected as Chef of the Year by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce. The award was bestowed at the Vermont Chamber Hospitality Gala, held at the Mountain Top Inn and Resort on Sept. 10 in Chittenden.

Barral is originally from the Montpelier area in France. He has been the executive chef in some of the finest kitchens in the world, including the Four Seasons in Boston, the New England Culinary Institute and Café Provence, which he opened in 2004.

Archery deer hunting season begins Oct. 5

VERMONT — Hunters are enthusiastic about Vermont’s upcoming Oct. 5-27 and Dec. 7-15 archery deer hunting season, according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. 

A hunter may take up to three deer in Vermont’s archery season with three archery licenses. No more than one of the deer taken during archery season may be a legal buck. No antlerless deer may be taken in Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) E, where antlerless deer hunting is prohibited in 2013.

Wildfire fighter: Bristol man battles blazes in Colorado, Montana

BRISTOL — Chris Casey of Bristol returned to Addison County on Sept. 10 after fighting wildfires in Colorado and Montana. Casey spent a total of 50 days out West this summer, fighting four different wildfires.

When he’s not battling wildfires, Casey works for the Green Mountain and Finger Lakes division of the U.S. Forest Service as a silviculturist, a specialist in forest management.

Connecticut man arrested in Bristol drug bust

BRISTOL — Bristol police have arrested a man they say was selling drugs. Terrence Devon Diggs, 33, was arrested on Thursday, Sept. 19, and is accused of the selling heroin.

Hospital budget back in the black

MIDDLEBURY — The Green Mountain Care Board has OK’d Porter Hospital’s request for a fiscal year 2014 budget of $69,809,477.

That spending requires a 1.4-percent increase in net revenues and a 6-percent bump in gross charges.

The budget provides further evidence of a substantial turnaround in Porter Hospital’s financial health, falls well below the state’s recommended 3-percent revenue cap, and will not force any job cuts, hospital officials said.

Vergennes council asked to reconsider pipeline support

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday heard for the first time a resident question whether the city should support the proposed Vermont Gas Systems pipeline through Addison County.

Resident Jeff Margolis asked aldermen to rescind their support of the proposed natural gas pipeline, which came in the form of a 2011 letter backing Vermont Gas’s application to the Public Service Board seeking to use a reserve fund to pay for the pipeline extension from Chittenden County.
