Salisbury hosts walk to school day on June 6

SALISBURY — Salisbury Community School will be holding a special Walk to School Day on Tuesday, June 6. Kelley Cross Road will be closed to through traffic by order of the town Selectboard so that students can walk the half-mile to school from either Holman Road or West Salisbury Road.

The event is being organized by science teacher Amy Clapp and her fifth grade Green Team, with support from the Vermont Energy Education Program. It will conclude a month-long study of natural resources and human impact on the environment for the school’s K-6 students.

Labor historian to give June 7 talk on 'What if poor women ran the world?'

MIDDLEURY — Labor historian Annelise Orleck will recount the struggle for welfare rights by Las Vegas women in the 1970s in a talk at Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury onJune 7 at 7 p.m. Her talk,What if Poor Women Ran the World?is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’sFirst Wednesdays lecture seriesand is free and open to the public. (Note: This talk is rescheduled from January.)

Brandon will hold its first carnival June 8-11

BRANDON — This summer, Brandon will hold its first-ever carnival. Brandon Rec and the Brandon Area Toy Project have teamed up to create a family friendly, free event for everyone to enjoy. The town will soon ring with laughter, glow by the lights of a carnival and rock with top shelf musical entertainment.

Vergennes Police Log: Vergennes police reunite 4-year-old with family

VERGENNES — The case of a wandering toddler preoccupied Vergennes police and state officials for several hours on May 15.

Police that Monday morning responded to a report of a 3- or 4-year-old boy walking barefoot down the middle of North Green Street and brought him to the station. Eventually, they were able to identify him through an item in his pockets and contact his father in an apartment not far from where he was found. They also contacted the Department for Children and Families.

Vermont State Police Log: Troopers issue assault citations

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police cited Addison County residents for assault in two separate incidents late last week.

On Thursday, May 18, at 4 p.m. troopers received a complaint about a citizen dispute in the Beaver Lane neighborhood of Monkton. After investigating, police came to believe that Brian Brown, 72, of Ferrisburgh arrived at the residence and was involved in a brief altercation with his tenant, a 50-year-old man.

Police cited Brown for simple assault.

Middlebury Police Log: Cops break up fight in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a reported fight between two men at the Maplefields store off North Pleasant Street on May 20.

Police stopped the dispute and sent both men on their way.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a dispute between Court Street neighbors on May 15.

•  Removed two men who were not welcome at a Court Street apartment on May 15.

Bristol Police Log: Police helped with bicycle safety

BRISTOL — On May 12 a Bristol police officer assisted in coordinating and completing a bicycle rodeo with a volunteer group at the Bristol Elementary School.

Students were instructed on safety checks and practiced safe operation of their bicycles without incident.

America, Brandon welcomes immigrants: New citizens sworn in at Neshobe School

BRANDON — They came from Thailand, Somalia, the Philippines, Canada, Sweden, Mali, Bhutan and more, but at the end of the May 10 naturalization ceremony at the Neshobe Elementary School in Brandon, 62 candidates from 29 countries left as Americans.

The event filled the school auditorium with elected officials, area residents, students and teachers. Even U.S. Rep. Peter Welch was on hand to be the first to welcome the newest citizens, the largest group ever gathered for the annual ceremony in Brandon.
