Shumlin explains decision not to seek re-election

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin says he decided to stand down in 2016 because he “didn’t have the fire in the belly for a fourth term.”

Shumlin made the remark on WDEV’s “The Mark Johnson Show” on Tuesday in a 34-minute interview.

State closes part of Route 125 for new bridge

BRIDPORT — The Vermont Agency of Transportation has announced a temporary road closure on Route 125, 2.3 miles west of Route 22A in Bridport, starting Monday, June 15, at 6 a.m. The road will reopen Saturday, June 20, at 6 a.m. The closure will allow  construction crews to replace the bridge that spans the west branch of the Dead Creek.

Signed detours will be in effect during this time. In addition, Route 125 will be closed to pedestrian and bicycle traffic during the five-day closure period.

Mount Abe budget passes on third vote

BRISTOL -- Mount Abraham Union High School has a budget for the coming school year.

Voters in the five-town area on Tuesday approved a $13,947,738 spending plan for fiscal year 2015-2016; the tally was 852 in favor and 597 opposed.

Gov. Shumlin says he won't run for re-election

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin today announced that he will not seek another term as the chief executive of the Green Mountain State.

In a press conference in the Statehouse, Shumlin said that by the end of his third term in January 2017 he will have completed what he set out to do as governor. He outlined what he said were his accomplishments as governor.

Ideas sought to reduce impacts of Middlebury RR tunnel project

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials last week identified next April as the start-up time for the estimated $50 million reconstruction of the community’s two downtown rail overpasses, a project they again stressed would be messy, noisy and inconvenient during up to three years of work that will ultimately yield additional green space near St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and a concrete tunnel that will someday accommodate double-stack train cars.

College nears deal to conserve Battell lands

RIPTON — Middlebury College, the Vermont Land Trust and the U.S. Forest Service are putting the final touches on an intricate deal that will allow the institution to consolidate and permanently conserve approximately 2,100 acres of land in and around the college’s Bread Loaf campus in Ripton.

Students put 'maker' spin on science

MONKTON — Fifth-grader George Collette’s entreaty to come see the science experiment waiting outside the Monkton Central School gymnasium this past Thursday afternoon was hard to turn down.

“Have you ever seen a marshmallow fly?” he asked.

Outside on the pavement, he and his team scrambled to ready their contraption. Using a bicycle pump, a length of PVC tubing and lots of tape, they used air pressure from the pump to launch marshmallows, as well as their favorite projectiles — wadded tissues soaked in water.
