MIDDLEBURY — Vintage bicycle collector and cycling historian Glenn Eames will present four gallery talks about the exhibit “Pedaling Through History: 150 years of the Bicycle, The Glenn Eames Collection at the Sheldon Museum.” The talks will take place on Wednesdays, July 27, Aug. 17 and Oct. 5 at noon, and on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.

Vermont is special to Fresh Air kids

ADDISON COUNTY — Ulysses Suazo, a 15-year-old from Bronx, N.Y., calls Vermont his second home thanks to Rebecca Kodis and her son, Darius Kainen-Kodis, 13.

For Suazo, Vermont is an escape from the chaotic pace of New York City living.

“In the South Bronx, people have a problem with you even if you just look at them. Over here, it’s just peaceful,” he said.

Middlebury officials backing downtown master plan

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on July 12 agreed to support the planning commission’s quest for a grant to help create a master plan for downtown Middlebury. It’s a document that supporters believe would lead to more careful and structured growth in an area of the community that has seen a lot of change recently, and is being sized up for more.

Porter seeking public opinion on its future

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center’s board has launched a community conversation including community forums and an online questionnaire as part of their strategic planning process regarding the future of Porter and health care delivery in our community.

According to Porter spokesperson Ron Hallman, the medical center is strongly encouraging members of the community to be a part of the forward-looking strategic planning process now underway to ensure the community continues to have access to high quality health care services for years to come.

Secrets of the time capsule to be revealed next week

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday, July 26, will open the time capsule recently found in the old municipal gym. And the ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in the new municipal building might include a person who was present when the mystery box was first secreted in the southeast cornerstone of the gym back in 1939.

NEW HAVEN — Taborri Bruhl had figured the highlight of his summer might be co-leading an educational trip to Spain with students from Rutland High School, where he teaches economics.

But a brief phone call from Addison County Democrats has shaken up his summer plans — and perhaps his professional life for years to come.

With a nudge from his party colleagues, Bruhl has decided to belatedly enter the race for the Addison-5 House seat that represents the towns of Bridport, New Haven and Weybridge. He will face veteran Rep. Harvey Smith, R-New Haven.

Wetlands save Middlebury millions of dollars by softening damage from floods

MIDDLEBURY — Wetlands like the Cornwall swamp and floodplains like those near the Salisbury flats have saved the town of Middlebury between $126,000 and $450,000 a year in flood damage over the past 80 years, plus up to $1.8 million when Tropical Storm Irene struck in 2011, according to a unique University of Vermont study recently made public.

Report lays out unification plan for Bristol-area schools

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union officials next Monday will officially unveil a proposed blueprint for uniting all of the district’s schools into a single entity governed by one board and financed through a global budget. The July 18 forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lincoln Community School.

After escape from the Third Reich, local artist lets her artwork bloom

MIDDLEBURY — Some of the most beautiful flowers can bloom in the darkness.

Klara Calitri will show you.

Just give her some paint and a brush and her fragile, diminutive, 93-year-old hands will send water lilies floating across the canvass and help some scarlet geraniums stretching toward the sky. She’ll give them friends, such as a contemplative cat or some determined dragonflies.
