Addison prepares for Act 46 referendum

ADDISON — The Addison Central School board on Jan. 21 adopted a $1,606,375 spending proposal for the 2016-2017 school year that, if approved on Town Meeting Day, would make few changes to school’s program and would raise spending by 4.12 percent, or about $63,000.

That increase is almost entirely driven by an expected hike of roughly 8 percent in health insurance benefits and contracted raises, said Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent JoAn Canning this week.

Working artists to offer their insights in a Q&A on Friday

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center will moderate a panel discussion, “Three Artists in the Working Forest: Conversation on Art, Documentary, and Representation with Kathleen Kolb, Verandah Porche, and George Bellerose,” on Friday, Feb. 5, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Vision & Voice Gallery in Middlebury.

The panel conversation and Q&A session will seek to illuminate how these three working artists approach the representation of their subjects from the vantage point of artistic creators, storytellers and ethnographers.

Concert, dessert contest to benefit Shoreham's Platt Library

SHOREHAM — Shoreham’s Friends of the Platt Memorial Library will host its fourth annual Benefit Concert and Maple Dessert Contest on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Music will be performed by Nelson Bandella. Brother and sister duo Ethan and Emily Nelson of Brandon will rock the library with their own special brand of folky Americana.

Porter Medical Center restructures, cuts jobs

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center late Friday announced a series of staff changes and management restructuring that eliminated a total of nine employees, mostly in the 12 physician practices owned and operated by Porter.

Management, clinical and clerical positions were affected by these changes, including seven at the doctors’ offices and two in the hospital proper. No jobs at the Helen Porter nursing home were cut.

Porter Medical Center employs a total of 780 people.

New Haven town leaders struggle with powerline

NEW HAVEN — A recent vote on the proposal to build a large converter station to accommodate a 400-megawatt power line that would bring renewable energy through New Haven revealed a selectboard divided in its assessments of the project’s pros and cons.

The Vermont Green Line project would bring New Haven roughly $1 million annually and a number of other enticements, according to developers’ pitch to the town last December.

Neshobe Golf Club hires Saylor as new superintendent

BRANDON — Neshobe Golf Club in Brandon announces that it has hired Chris Saylor as its new golf superintendent. Current Golf Superintendent Nate Dyer will be leaving Neshobe in March.

“It is with mixed emotions that I have accepted a new position as the superintendent at Rocky Ridge Golf Club,” Dyer said. “The new position will allow me to work closer to home, spend more time with my family, and my wife and I are expecting our third child.”

Vt. Folklife Center to host chocolate Valentine event

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center in Middlebury announces its third annual “Love Chocolate, Love Stories” event, which will take place at the center’s headquarters at 88 Main St. in Middlebury on Friday, Feb. 12.

“Love Chocolate, Love Stories” will include a day-long competition/showcase of chocolate confections, baked goods and desserts — modeled on our annual gingerbread competition — beginning at 10 a.m., with a Valentine’s Day program at 4 p.m. followed by a tasting session from 5 to 7 p.m.

Weybridge duo bags 115 high peaks — in winter

WEYBRIDGE — Nothing like spending a sunny afternoon hiking up a mountain. The picnic lunch tastes even better with a panoramic view.

But how about driving four hours to get to the base of a mountain for a hike of more than 4,000 feet to the summit, wading through armpit-high snowdrifts while braving sub-zero temperatures and fierce winds with only a frozen hard-boiled egg to gnaw on for sustenance? How about facing that kind of challenge 115 times on mountains throughout the Northeast — and only during the winter?
