Rokeby director to give talk on abolitionists Nov. 14

VERGENNES — Long before the Civil War commenced, another war was taking place in the U.S. Historian and Rokeby Museum director Jane Williamson will give an illustrated presentation on the philosophies, strategies, and tactics of the 1830s abolitionists of Vermont on Nov 14, at 7 p.m., at Bixby Memorial Library. The talk will compare the efforts of Vermont abolitionists with those of earlier antislavery movements and explore their impacts on American society.

Learn about unusual and rare plants at Rokeby

FERRISBURGH — The public is invited to the Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh on Oct. 22 to learn about Vermont’s rare and unusual plants with botanist Robert Popp.

Popp tracks and inventories rare and unusual plants for Vermont’s Department of Fish and Wildlife. From mountain-top ferns to wetland sedges, Vermont has dozens of uncommon varieties. Species may be rare because they have particular habitat requirements, are subject to habitat loss, are at the edge of their range, or are vulnerable to disturbance or collection.

Author to discuss his book on Frederick Douglass

Scholar and author John Stauffer will present his groundbreaking new work, “Picturing Frederick Douglass,” at Rokeby Museum on Sunday, July 23 at 3 p.m.

Rokeby to exhibit 100-year-old NYC postcards by Vt. artist

FERRISBURGH — As Rokeby Museum Director Jane Williamson researched artist Rachael Robinson Elmer, who grew up at the Rokeby homestead in the late 1800s, she read of a mysterious painting. The depiction of New York’s City Hall painted in the Impressionist style had been rejected from a series Elmer created for a group of 12 postcards in the early 1900s, and it had not been seen since.

What Williamson didn’t expect was to find the very painting in the Rokeby archives, where it had been nestled since Elmer’s death in 1919.

Civil War historian Howard Coffin to offer talk at Rokeby Museum

FERRISBURGH — Howard Coffin, Vermont’s premier Civil War historian, will be at Rokeby Museum on Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m. to celebrate his new book, “Something Abides: Discovering the Civil War in Today’s Vermont.” Coffin will shar4e stories from among the hundreds he collected from more than 200 Vermont towns.

Rokeby Museum to open new education center on May 19

FERRISBURGH — Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh will open its new Education Center and exhibit on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m. The ribbon cutting celebrates a decade of planning and fundraising for the $1.2 million project. The center provides much-needed facilities, including rest rooms and meeting space, and houses the new 2,500-square-foot exhibit, “Free & Safe: The Underground Railroad in Vermont.”

Vital Rokeby Museum building completed; key exhibit next

FERRISBURGH — After more than a decade of planning and effort and a few setbacks along the way, the 13-year-old dreams for Ferrisburgh’s Rokeby Museum to become a major Underground Railroad history site and dramatically expand its ability to handle visitors is a giant step closer to reality.

Brandon general contractor Naylor & Breen Builders recently finished a two-story, roughly $1.5 million visitor center on the Route 7 site that will go by the name the Rokeby Museum Underground Railroad Education Center.

Rokeby breaks ground on $1.4m visitor center

FERRISBURGH — More than a decade after Rokeby Museum officials first envisioned the concept, workers have broken ground there on a visitors’ center that will house an exhibit on the Ferrisburgh historic site’s pivotal roles in the Underground Railroad and anti-slavery movement.

If the weather continues to cooperate with general contractor Naylor & Breen Builders if Brandon, the roughly $1.4 million Rokeby Museum Underground Railroad Education Center will be finished by August.
