MUHS girls' hockey advances to Division 1 semifinal

MIDDLEBURY — The No. 2 Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team had little trouble in Friday night’s Division quarterfinal against hard-working, but overmatched, No. 7 Burlington-Colchester, outshooting the SeaLakers by 37-11 in a 5-0 victory.

Now it gets interesting.

On Monday, the 16-4-1 Tigers host No. 3 Rutland (15-4-2), while three-time defending champion and top-seeded Essex (16-3-2) hosts No. 4 BFA-St. Albans (14-7).

Girls' hoop: Eagles and Tigers win

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham defeated Vergennes to highlight local girls’ basketball as the regular season concluded late last week. In other games, Middlebury picked up a key home win, but Otter Valley lost on the road.

The Vermont Principals’ Association was set to release playoff pairings on Monday morning. Teams will play first-round games on either Tuesday or Wednesday, with quarterfinals on Friday or Saturday.

Tiger boys fall in D-I hockey quarterfinal

SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team won a first-round Division I playoff game last week before losing a road quarterfinal. The Tigers finished at 12-8-2 and fared better than the other three D-II teams who were bumped up to D-I this winter.

Middlebury boys' hockey squad hits post-season with wins

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey last week finished strong in its first winter back in Division I, winning twice to finish at 11-7-2.

That record is the best among the four D-II teams that moved up to D-I this past offseason and will apparently earn the Tigers the No. 6 seed.

Tigers withstand Commodore rally in girls' hoop

VERGENNES — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team left Vergennes with a 48-41 victory on Monday, but the Commodores made the Tigers earn it.

MUHS led by 40-25 when Tiger senior Riley Fenster laid in a fast-break feed from classmate Payton Buxton with 6:50 to go in the fourth period, but Commodore sophomores Brianna Van Der Way and Morgan Lynk sparked VUHS with five points apiece in the quarter as the host team fought back.

Area Nordic athletes to ski for state

CRAFTSBURY — This past Saturday, nine Middlebury-area Nordic skiers traveled to Craftsbury for a day of racing. The goal was to qualify for one of two teams — an elite high school team and an under-age-16 group — that will represent Vermont in regional youth championship races next month.

MUHS gymnastics team vies at state meet

ESSEX — The Middlebury Union High School gymnastics team concluded its season by finishing sixth among 10 teams at this past Saturday’s state championship meet at Essex High School.

Host Essex won the title for the 12th straight season, scoring 144.25 points to defeat second-place Champlain Valley (139.775), with South Burlington (131.90) in third. Division I St. Johnsbury took fourth (121.20).

Tiger dance team earns third-place finishes

VERGENNES — The Middlebury Union High School dance team finished third in both of its disciplines, Jazz and Hip-Hop, at the state championship competition, held on Saturday at Vergennes Union High School.

Mount Mansfield won both those disciplines by wide margins. Lamoille edged the Tigers by a single point for second place among nine teams in the Hip Hop competitions, while South Burlington finished second among eight teams in Jazz.
