Driscoll's hat trick leads Mt. Abe to emotional win

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team earned an emotional home win on Friday, defeating Middlebury, 5-1, in the Eagles’ first game since junior teammate Olivia Scott took her own life earlier in the week.

Their Wednesday home game vs. Mount Mansfield was cancelled, and according to Middlebury sources the Mount Abe team and coaches met and decided to go forward with Friday’s game.

Girls' soccer: Mt. Abe stomps visiting Missisquoi

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham was the only winner in area girls’ high school girls’ soccer action late last week, as the Eagles won at home. Vergennes dropped a road game, Middlebury lost twice, and Otter Valley (1-10) was idle.

In football, Eagles fall to powerful Mill River

EAST CLARENDON — Host Mill River rode a fast start to a 44-14 victory over the Mount Abraham football team on Saturday. The Minutemen improved to 6-1 and will look to lock up the No. 2 seed this week. The Eagles dropped to 5-2, but remained in the hunt for a first-round Division III home game. They will host Poultney on Saturday afternoon.

Area cross country runners compete at major Thetford meet

THETFORD — Two seniors — Middlebury Union High School’s Max Moulton and Mount Abraham’s Natalie May — were the top local cross-country runners in Saturday’s 23rd annual Woods Trail Run at Thetford Academy.

Moulton crossed the finish line in the boys’ 5-kilometer race in 18:19, good for 54th among the more than 700 male runners from schools all over New England.

Mt. Abe slips past Vergennes in boys' soccer

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abe edged Vergennes to remain unbeaten and highlight area high school boys’ soccer action in the latter half of last week.

In other action, Middlebury dropped a pair of road games, and VUHS picked up a tie away from home. Otter Valley (4-6) was idle.

Field  hockey:  Eagles  nipped  by  strong  Essex  team,  2-­1

BRISTOL — Friday’s 2-1 setback to visiting Division I Essex dropped the Division II Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team to 5-3, but even though it represented the Eagles’ third loss in four games, Coach Mary Stetson was not upset afterward.

To start with, the 5-1-2 Hornets are playing like D-I title favorites. Friday’s win was their fifth straight and the first in that stretch in which Essex has even allowed a goal.

Starksboro couple teams up with Mount Abe to fight hunger

STARKSBORO — A Starksboro couple is spearheading an effort to send more than a quarter of a million meals to hungry children in Haiti, and is enlisting the help of students and student athletes at Mount Abraham Union High School.

Nancy and Greg Orvis are raising money for With Love From Vermont, a Chittenden County-based charity that reaches into Addison and Rutland counties, which sends food packages to targeted audiences in poor countries.

Boys' soccer: Eagles remain perfect; Commodores win; Tigers fall

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ soccer action on Tuesday, Mount Abraham won on the road to reach the midpoint of the regular season with an unbeaten record, Vergennes won at home in double overtime to reach .500, and Middlebury lost at home. Otter Valley (3-3) was idle earlier this week.

Spaulding football is no match for Eagles

BRISTOL — Football teams who face the Mount Abraham/Vergennes Union High School teams this year know they are going to be fed dangerous doses of the team’s powerful running back tandem of Tommy Lee Hodsden and Austin Lafayette.

Visiting Spaulding was no different on Saturday, though they also got a glimpse of the Eagles’ developing passing attack, which produced two scores en route to the Eagles’  38-6 victory.

Eagles dominate, but just edge Tiger field hockey, 4-3

MIDDLEBURY — Friday’s field hockey game at Middlebury Union High School showed both why Mount Abraham should again be a force in Division II this fall, and why the Tigers could take a step forward from 2012.

In the end, the 4-0 Eagles deservedly walked off with a 4-3 win in which they built a 4-1 lead and earned edges of 20-8 in shots at goal and 16-6 in penalty corners.
