BRISTOL — For the past 20 years, scale attendant George Smith, 89, has made taking the trash to the dump an extraordinary experience.

Bristol residents came out in droves last Saturday to thank Smith for his long service to Bristol, shake hands, and say farewell to the town’s landfill and to Smith’s quietly charismatic presence and welcoming smile.

Saturday, Aug. 1, was the Bristol town landfill’s last day.

Bristol landfill might close in August

Posted on June 11, 2015 |
By Joseph Brown

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard may have found a solution to state environmental officials’ request that the town  close its landfill by the end of 2016 due to environmental concerns.

The plan? To close, cap and cover the landfill — which is one of only two of the state’s remaining unlined landfills — by this August with financial help from a different arm of state government.

BRISTOL — Representatives from Casella Waste Systems on Monday met with the Bristol selectboard to discuss a possible deal through which the trash hauler would help the town fill and close its landfill.

Bristol officials reached out to the Rutland waste management company after efforts to get the state to help pay for landfill closing costs were unsuccessful.

Bristol again at odds with state over landfill

Bristol board: Closing landfill will cost less

Posted on December 11, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

BRISTOL — Town Administrator Therese Kirby at a Holley Hall meeting on Monday evening gave the Bristol selectboard some promising news as the town tries to find funding to close the municipal landfill by the end of 2016.

Kirby said that in recent weeks the town has met with two separate manufacturers of a material used to cover landfills. Using material purchased from either of the firms, Omya and Resource Management Inc., would be substantially cheaper than covering the landfill with clay, as the town had initially planned to do.

Bristol votes to close landfill at end of 2016

Posted on November 26, 2014 |

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Monday voted to close the town landfill when its current certification expires at the end of 2016.

The decision came after what Town Administrator Therese Kirby called a productive meeting between town and state Agency of Natural Resources officials to find ways to fund the landfill’s closure.

“They understand the plight of Bristol residents and are trying to help us avoid bonding, look for money, and find an alternative (landfill) cover,” Kirby said.

Salisbury's town landfill on healthy financial footing

SALISBURY — While Bristol is facing pressure from state officials to close its municipal dump as soon as next year and quickly come up with the estimated $1.5 million to do so, Salisbury — home to the only other unlined landfill still operating in Vermont — is on course to keep its facility open for another two decades and has already put away enough savings to cover closure costs.

Bristol, Agency of Natural Resources at odds over future of town landfill

BRISTOL — Officials in Bristol are at odds with the state over when to close the town’s landfill and how to pay for it.

In August, the Agency of Natural Resources sent the town four notices of alleged violations for the landfill, which is located off Pine Street. The town was able to address three of them, but one, that alleges that Bristol has failed to save enough money every year to pay for the closure of the landfill, has left the selectboard in a bind.
