Local sculptors' whimsical iron crane greets Sheldon visitors

MIDDLEBURY — While still an orthopedic surgeon in Utica, N.Y., Dr. Warren Rinehart used a team of Belgian draft horses to work his farm. He soon tired of hiring a local blacksmith to shoe the horses, and took up blacksmithing and forging. His childhood had been spent on a farm in Kansas and Dr. Rinehart was comfortable tackling the multiple chores associated with animals and crops. Before retirement he settled in Vermont to join the Medical Center at the University of Vermont.

Northern Daughters opens a second gallery in Shelburne

Edgewater Gallery at The Falls in Middlebury (that’s the one on Mill Street) presents photographs by Jon Olsen in “Stillness,” a solo exhibition on view for the month of September, with an opening reception on Friday, Sept. 14, from 5-7 p.m. This series explores the tranquility of the Vermont winterscape and the serene effects of snow blanketing a spacious landscape.

Art on Main in Bristol has put up their new exhibit, “What I Saw: Photographs by Anne Majusiak.” Majusiak’s work is known by many in the area who follow her on Facebook and Instagram — each new image a testament to her unique eye and fierce commitment to getting the right setting, the right time of day, the right angle and the right light. That and a little “magic” imbues her photographs of iconic Vermont scenes with something distinctive.

Art in Nature event held at Dead Creek's visitor center

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department will host an evening of art in nature at the Dead Creek Visitor Center in Addison on Thursday, Aug. 9, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  This free event will consist of a short talk and refreshments at the Visitor Center, after which the group will venture outside to the wildlife management area for some nature exploration through art creation.

Sheldon Museum installs new outdoor sculptures

Two new sculptures bloom in the flower gardens adjacent to the Henry Sheldon Museum in Middlebury: “Big Fish” by Marty McGowan of Newark, and “Anyman aka The Head” by John Matusz of Waitsfield. Both artists are accomplished sculptors and their work brings an added dimension to the Museum’s founding mission as an art museum highlighting Vermonters. The sculptures were installed in mid-July and will remain until at least the end of the year.

Lincoln school wall becomes a canvas for artists

LINCOLN — Though the Muses will have plenty of chances over the coming year to descend upon the Lincoln Community School, the art that is now emerging there will require more than inspiration; it will require hundreds of hours of sweat and labor.

That and about 30,000 pieces of tile, glass and stone.
