DiNapoli assumes lead at ANeSU after Superintendent Adams goes on leave

BRISTOL — The superintendent of the Bristol-area school district, David Adams, has gone on leave, and the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school board has named Assistant Superintendent Catrina DiNapoli to take over his duties while an “acting superintendent” is found.

Adams has drawn fire in the past seven months as voters rejected budget proposals for three of the district’s six schools, the teachers’ union voted no confidence in his leadership and a petition signed by 500 people asked for his resignation.

UPDATE: ANeSU appoints interim superintendent

BRISTOL — Monday night, the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school board appointed Assistant Superintendent Catrina DiNapoli as Acting Superintendent, with responsibilities effective today, Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The ANeSU board also passed a motion to begin a search for a new superintendent.

The board took no formal action regarding Superintendent David Adams. ANeSU board chair Dawn Griswold said in an email on Tuesday afternoon that:

Mediator tells embattled ANeSU to go for training

BRISTOL — A federal mediator has recommended that the superintendent of the Bristol-area schools and the teachers in those schools take part in training to warm up the cool relationship between the parties.

The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Executive Committee and the Addison Northeast Education Association teachers union (ANEDA) posted a joint statement and the recommendations of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services (FMCS) mediator on the ANeSU website this past Thursday.

ANeSU tax rates rise and fall within a small range

ADDISON COUNTY — As property tax bills arrive in the mailboxes of residents in the five towns of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union (ANeSU), homeowners in Monkton and New Haven will see the overall tax rates fall compared to last year, while those in Lincoln, Starksboro and Bristol will see their overall tax rates rise.

Municipal tax rates increased in Bristol and Lincoln, and decreased in Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro. Education taxes increased in all towns except Bristol, where they decreased slightly.

Starksboro residents approve new budget for Robinson Elementary

BRISTOL — More than 200 Starksboro residents packed the auditorium at Mount Abraham Union High School on Saturday morning for a special meeting to reconsider the budget Robinson Elementary School voters approved in February.

After more than an hour of debate, those residents approved a spending plan that was larger than the figure originally warned for the Feb. 28 annual meeting, but less than the figure that had been approved at that February meeting.

Third vote on Mt. Abe budget set for June 9

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board is asking Addison Northeast Supervisory Union voters to mark their calendars for June 9, when the board expects to hold a vote on a third proposed FY 2016 spending plan for the school.

“The process of developing that new budget will be worked on over the next few weeks,” said board chair Dawn Griswold in a statement.

I am writing to ask every registered voter in Starksboro to come to the Reconsideration of the Robinson Elementary Budget meeting at Mt. Abe, Saturday, May 2, at 9 a.m. This reconsideration opportunity was made possible by a group of taxpayers who got a petition together and signed in response to the unprecedented increase in the Robinson budget voted from the floor at Town Meeting.

ANeSU to bring in a mediator; board hopes to improve climate

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Executive Committee at a special meeting Thursday pledged to address what it characterized as a “deteriorated environment” in the district’s six schools.

“The committee recognizes the need for an immediate assessment of current conditions,” the committee said in a prepared statement.

I have been closely following the events in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union — the failed budgets of some of our schools as well as the issues that have arisen around the leadership of Superintendent David Adams. I have attended many meetings of different boards over the past month as the community and employees of the district have sought to gain insight and clarity into the situation.

Opinion: Message clear on budget defeats

What is the mystery with the Bristol school budgets?

Both Bristol school budgets were voted down twice. The second time had the same budget amounts as the first time. The school boards are having trouble understanding why the second time failed. Hopefully for the next budget re-vote, the proposed budgets will be significantly lower.
