n Welch LEAD 0017.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — “It’s a mess in Washington,” Congressman Peter Welch told a group of Champlain Valley specialty crop farmers who gathered in Middlebury last week to share their wish lists for the 2018 farm bill. But, despite the dysfunction in much of the nation’s capital,  the Vermont Democrat said there is still hope because there tends to be bipartisan support to “get a decent farm bill.”

Key to building that support, he said, is first gathering specific concerns and recommendations from constituents.

MONKTON — Young Nathan Baldwin, all of three years old, races happily through the dairy barn on the farm formerly run by the Cota brothers, stopping to hug a few weeks’ old heifers. They nudge back playfully.

Outside the barn, some of dad Matt Baldwin’s mature Jerseys and Holsteins move through the grass, grazing peacefully. Looking south — past a small mountain of plastic-wrapped haylage —  green fields stretch toward the horizon, hugging Hogback Ridge to the east.

MIDDLEBURY — While lawmakers in Montpelier argue over marijuana legalization, Middlebury dairy farmers Joel Pomainville and Sam Berthiaume are readying harvest of a cousin of marijuana — hemp — that promoters hope could be a new cash crop for Vermont farmers.

“The potential is so huge on this stuff,” said Berthiaume.

Secretary of Agriculture Anson Tebbetts, who toured Pomainville and Berthiaume’s 13 acres of hemp on Monday morning, said hemp could be a supplement crop for Vermont’s dairy farmers, like maple syrup.

Cocktail-culture is back. But you already know that.

We’ve seen craft cideries, breweries, wineries, distilleries and specialty cocktail bars pop up and grow all around our county and state in the last five to 10 years. But have you ever wondered why these specialty libations have become so popular?

Brad Koehler, owner of Windfall Orchard, has a few theories.

Koehler’s in the craft alcohol biz. He uses the fruit he grows in Cornwall to make high-quality hard cider, ice wine and perry (similar to hard cider, but made from pears).
