VERGENNES — The Bixby Library is about to embark on almost a quarter-million dollars of renovations, repairs and reconfigurations that its board members and director think will not only help preserve the Vergennes landmark, but also enhance the library’s ability to meet the needs of the five communities it serves.

Board members said funding for what will in fact be three separate projects will come from the library’s maintenance endowment, grants, donations, and the sale of tax credits.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh offers the only major contested race for office among the communities that make up the Addison Northwest School District. But in addition to weighing in on the usual selectboard budget proposals and a $21.1 million school-spending plan, on Town Meeting Day residents of Vergennes and the four towns will be facing questions about fire and highway trucks and town hall repairs.

ANWSD eyes level-funded budget with staffing cuts

Posted on January 8, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest School District board on Wednesday leaned toward adopting a level-funded $21.1 million spending plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

It’s a budget that ANWSD officials said would mean elementary school and support staff personnel cuts, but would also maintain educational programming and limit a property tax increase to less than the 9.4 cents expected statewide.

After 12 years, Waltham property to be assessed

Posted on January 8, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

WALTHAM — During recent discussions on a 2018-2019 town budget, the Waltham selectboard decided to fund a town-wide property reappraisal, according to Town Clerk Mary Ann Castimore and Treasurer Lucille Evarts.

Evarts last week said the decision will not affect the budget because Waltham has been setting aside funds given to the town from the state for that purpose for the past dozen years — or since the last town-wide property evaluation was completed.

Evarts estimated Waltham had about $26,000 on hand for a task that should cost about $21,000.

VERGENNES — Earlier during her Vergennes Union High School years senior Emma Husk was not exactly thrilled with the school food, either its taste or its quality.

“It wasn’t just that I didn’t like it, but it made me feel like gross and slow and groggy,” Husk said.

Her friend and classmate Kaitlyn Brace, one of a group of seniors and juniors that usually eats lunch in a room off the school library, also gave a thumbs-down review of what used to be served in the VUHS cafeteria.

By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — The final 2017-2018 residential property tax rates in the three smaller Addison Northwest School District towns, Panton, Waltham and Addison, are lower than in the 2016-2017 fiscal year, although the decrease in Panton is minimal.

Meanwhile, non-residential rates — paid by owners of business and rental property and second homes along Lake Champlain — dropped in Waltham, rose by less than 2 cents in Addison, and increased by around 5 cents in Panton.
