Vermont State Police Log: Troopers issue assault citations

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police cited Addison County residents for assault in two separate incidents late last week.

On Thursday, May 18, at 4 p.m. troopers received a complaint about a citizen dispute in the Beaver Lane neighborhood of Monkton. After investigating, police came to believe that Brian Brown, 72, of Ferrisburgh arrived at the residence and was involved in a brief altercation with his tenant, a 50-year-old man.

Police cited Brown for simple assault.

Tent caterpillars expected to cause damage statewide this summer

MONTPELIER — Forest tent caterpillars have hatched, according to forest health specialists from the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. The insect is expected to cause widespread defoliation this summer, mostly in forests across northeastern and central Vermont.

Ramps are one of state's local wild edibles

The white bulbs of wild leeks, also called ramps (especially in the south), can be eaten year round, but it’s the early leaves that are most appreciated. In pre-freezer days, ramps were the first greens available after five or so months of potatoes and they were considered important as well as good tasting. Ramp festivals are still held in much of Appalachia to celebrate the arrival of this nutritious fresh food, and these tourist attractions have become so successful that in some places ramps are overharvested.

Democratic lawmakers, governor at impasse on budget

MONTPELIER — After weeks of inconclusive negotiations with the governor, legislative leaders on Wednesday afternoon said it was time to move on.

“We have reached an impasse,” House Speaker Mitzi Johnson, D-South Hero, said.

Johnson and Senate President Pro Tem Tim Ashe, D/P-Chittenden, presented a united front, saying more than a dozen meetings with Gov. Phil Scott’s administration on the issue of teachers’ health care negotiations had not yielded a satisfactory result.

Regulations, future of ag top farmers' worries on statewide listening tour

VERMONT — Throughout February and March, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets held a Listening Tour to gather feedback and ideas about farming in our state. Over the course of six weeks, the agency hosted meetings in five and towns and cities, including Middlebury. More than 300 farmers and community members attended.

“The suggestions and ideas shared by participants were insightful, and covered a wide range of topics,” said Agriculture Secretary Anson Tebbetts recently.

Grants for innovative water quality projects available

COLCHESTER — The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service is seeking applications for water quality-focused conservation innovation grants in Vermont.

USDA-NRCS in Vermont will invest up to a total of $225,000 for projects that spark the development and adoption of innovative conservation technologies and approaches that address water quality. The maximum award amount for any project will not exceed $75,000 in fiscal year 2017.

MONTPELIER — Landowners considering logging on their land can now benefit from a series of simple and concise guides, designed to address the most common questions about timber harvests.

Gov. Phil Scott and Vermont Forests, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Michael Snyder recently introduced “The Landowner Guides to a Successful Timber Harvest.” These guides encourage wisely planned harvests that support forest health while maintaining or enhancing wildlife habitat, protecting water quality, and encouraging opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Vermont ranks 8th in the nation for female farmers

VERMONT — Vermont’s Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets is highlighting the important role women play in Vermont’s Ag community.

Women represent about 22.3 percent of the principal farm operators in Vermont, according to the most recent USDA agricultural census. That number is significantly greater than the national average, which is 14 percent. A “principal operator” is defined as the person overseeing the daily farm operations.

Vermont ranks 9th in the nation for percentage of principal farm operators that are women.
