Welch: Trump should be impeached

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Peter Welch (D-Vt.) has concluded that President Donald Trump should be impeached.

“I do not arrive at this conclusion lightly,” he wrote in a statement released Thursday morning. “The power of impeachment granted to Congress by our Founding Fathers should not be casually employed. In our democracy, every deference should be given to the outcome of every election.”

Epic battle to be reenacted at Fort Ticonderoga

TICONDEROGA, N.Y. — Experience one of Fort Ticonderoga’s signature events, “Montcalm’s Cross,” a two-day battle reenactment, Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21. Featuring hundreds of reenactors, cannons, drums, muskets and more, this is the largest battle reenactment of the year at Fort Ticonderoga. The battle will highlight the epic Battle of Carillon fought between the British and French in July 1758, considered the bloodiest battle in North America until the American Civil War.

UVM crop, soil data to be unveiled in Alburgh

ALBURGH — Growers will get an update on ongoing and innovative crop and soil research trials at Borderview Research Farm in Alburgh as part of the 12th annual Crops and Soils Field Day, July 25. 

The event, sponsored by the University of Vermont Extension Northwest Crops and Soils program, will feature a tour of the farm (located at 487 Line Rd.), workshops, exhibitors and a tasting tent where participants can sample food products from local vendors. In addition, UVM researchers will share highlights from the last 12 years of their research at the farm.

Taxi your pet to be spayed in Williston

MIDDLEBURY – Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society, is partnering with Vermont Spay/Neuter (VSN), a low-cost clinic housed at Affectionately Cats in Williston, to provide pet owners with access to affordable spay/neuter services for cats. The clinic is offered on Wednesdays. Homeward Bound has arranged to transport cats from Addison County on July 17 and Aug. 7.

Vermont gave ICE license information

VERMONT — In 2013, Vermont became one of the few states in the nation to offer driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants. Six years later, it is one of two states to have allowed federal immigration authorities to search its photographic database of drivers.

Vermont and Utah have used facial recognition technology to run searches for U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, known as ICE, according to documents compiled by Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy and Technology. Vermont stopped the practice in 2017.

Cyanobacteria blooms can pose risk in lakes

VERMONT — Warm weather is a welcome sign of summer, but it also creates ideal conditions for cyanobacteria to grow in Vermont waters. Cyanobacteria (sometimes referred to as blue-green algae) are tiny microorganisms. In large numbers they sometimes form blooms on the water’s surface and wash up along shorelines — and can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals.

Mosquito larvae moderately low

With June just ended, the second quarter of 2019 will likely test the record books for rain. While n o t as severe as April, which saw essentially double the average rainfall, May and June continued to be well above average. Even though Otter Creek is within its banks, the wetlands are still holding an excessive amount of water. Continued large rainfall will perpetuate large mosquito nesting areas. However, the worst of the flooded fields is hopefully, but no guarantees, in the past.

Vermont State Police Log: Motorcycle crashes into deer in Ripton

ADDISON COUNTY — On the morning of July 4 Vermont State Police responded to a report of a motorcycle hitting a deer on Lincoln Road in Ripton.

Police report that sometime before 11:20 a.m. this past Thursday, Robert Wesley, 54, of Ripton was driving a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle northbound on Lincoln Road when a deer entered the roadway. Wesley reportedly attempted to avoid the deer but collided with animal. Neither alcohol nor drugs played a factor in the collision, police said.

Workplace harassment video guidance available

MONTPELIER — Attorney General T.J. Donovan recently released a video guidance aimed at assisting Vermont employers in understanding workplace sexual harassment laws. The video, entitled Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, provides businesses with an overview of Vermont’s current workplace sexual harassment laws and summarizes employers’ obligations under the law.
