Vermont bans pesticides cited to cause local bee die-off

MONTPELIER — A coalition of scientists, beekeepers, environmental advocates and farmers said they were extremely pleased that the Senate voted 29-0 to ban the use of neonicotinoid pesticides, a leading driver of bee decline, on all ornamental, non-agricultural plants in Vermont. The bill, which the Senate passed last week, also will require that seed dealers accept orders for corn and soy seeds that are untreated with neonicotinoid pesticides for the 2019 planting season.

Picking apples, learning how maple syrup is made, tasting heirloom tomatoes, milking a cow — all of these activities are part of the growing trend of agritourism.

A few generations ago, most families had relatives, friends or neighbors living on farms, if they weren’t farmers themselves. Today the age-old tradition of visiting farms and ranches to experience agriculture and celebrate harvests is seeing a revival in Vermont and throughout the U.S. and other countries.

Gov. Scott to call lawmakers back next week

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott told lawmakers Tuesday that he plans to call them back to Montpelier for a special session next week, mainly to settle a $33 million disparity in their education funding proposals.

In a letter to Speaker of the House Mitzi Johnson, D-South Hero, and President Pro Tem Tim Ashe, D/P-Chittenden, Scott said he intends to call a session that would start on Wednesday, May 23, and wrap up by Friday, May 25.

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s senators and representatives worked past midnight Saturday to reach compromises on the tax bill, the budget and other key pieces of legislation from this session.

Vt. historic sites to open May 26

ADDISON — Chimney Point, Mount Independence and Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Sites open for the 2018 season on Saturday, May 26, at 10 a.m. These sites host a variety of engaging programs. Hours of operation this year will be 10:00 to 5:00.

Watch for turtles crossing roads to lay eggs

MONTPELIER — It’s springtime and Vermont’s turtles on are on the move. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is asking for the public’s help in keeping them safe. Female turtles are looking for places to deposit their eggs, sometimes choosing to lay along the shoulders of roads, which can end tragically.

Local youth show off their horse smarts

BURLINGTON — The State 4-H Horse Judging Contest, sponsored by University of Vermont Extension 4-H, was held May 6. In addition to the 33 4-H participants, six Future Farmers of America members took part.

The competition was split between two locations, Equestrian’s Edge, Fairfax (judging) and Westford Elementary School, Westford (oral reasons and awards ceremony). The youths judged five classes of horses, which were stock horse in hand, hunter in hand, Western pleasure, hunter under saddle and hunt seat equitation.

Bella Voce perform this weekend in Stowe, Colchester

Vermont’s premier women’s chorus is headed to Scotland this summer so they have some wonderful music from the British Isles to share with you, including a Gaelic carol and an annual, familiar tune by beloved Scottish poet Robert Burns. Fans of the “Outlander” TV series will recognize the “Skye Boat Song.” You’ll hear a Northumbrian folk song and Cantiamo will perform the playful English Madrigal “Fair Phyllis.”

Beware of moose on the roads

MONTPELIER — Drivers need to be alert and cautious because moose are on the move, according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. Moose are more likely to be crossing roadways at this time of year, especially after dark or early in the morning as they move from wintering areas to spring feeding locations.

More moose are hit by motorists in the spring than at any other time of the year. There is another peak of activity in September and October, the breeding season for moose.
