'Wild Ones' take over Northern Daughters: Reception this Friday

VERGENNES — Northern Daughters presents “Dear Wild Ones,” an exhibit featuring the work of Rebecca Kinkead and Eben Markowski. The exhibition is on view at the gallery’s 221 Main St. location in Vergennes, from June 1-July 9, with an opening reception this Friday, June 9, from 5-8 p.m.

The concept for this exhibit, emerged after Kinkead and Markowski first met at Northern Daughters gallery. The two expressed interest in exhibiting together in a show dedicated to the wild animals both so reverently depict in their work.

N.Y. man caught with heroin stash and over $13,000 in cash

MIDDLEBURY — About 18 grams of heroin and $13,725 in cash have been seized following a traffic stop by the Addison County Sheriff’s Department, court records show.

Lamont Hudgkins, 35, of Staten Island, N.Y., has pleaded innocent in Vermont Superior Court, criminal division, in Middlebury to charges of heroin trafficking, conspiracy to traffic in heroin and possession of 10 ounces of marijuana — all felonies. He was initially jailed for lack of $75,000 bail, but has since been released on a bail bond with conditions.

County forester urges city to preserve trees on town green

VERGENNES — Addison County Forester Chris Olson said last week Vergennes officials should look at other methods of helping grass grow in some areas of the city’s central green before considering removing trees, according to City Manager Mel Hawley.

Hawley said when he met with Olson on Wednesday morning that the forester also said none of the trees on the green, including two large maples behind the monument about which city official were worried, were so unhealthy they should be removed.

Panton poet to be featured at Zig Zag 'Table Read' series May 30 at Bixby

VERGENNES — On Tuesday, May 30, at 6 p.m., the Bixby Library will host a poetry event sponsored by Zig Zag Lit Mag, Addison County’s arts and literary magazine, as part of their Table Read Series.

Panton poet Michelle L. Mowery will present “Parallel Circuit,” an in-progress chapbook of poetry whose subject the author describes as, “a particular kind of love: There was an electricity between the two / an unwelcomed / untimed / undeniable spark.”

City council considers amendments to town plan, including Solar Overlay District

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council on May 23 accepted from the city’s planning commission amendments to the city plan that would create a Solar Overlay District and related energy policies and fold the Vergennes Downtown-Basin Master Plan into the larger document.

The amendments would also add the state’s new recycling and composting law, Act 148, to the plan’s Solid Waste/Materials Management Section and move two lots along the far end of West Main Street from a Low Density into a neighboring Medium Density Residential Zone.

Zig Zag seeks submissions from writers, artists

VERGENNES — Zig Zag Lit Mag, Addison County’s arts and literary magazine, has issued a call for submissions of writing and artwork for its third issue. Submissions will be accepted from June 1 until July 15.Zig Zag’s Issue 3 is expected to be released at an event on Sept. 24 in the barrel room of Stonecutter Spirits in Middlebury.

Vergennes finalizes moving farmers' market to N. Main Street

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Farmers’ Market will officially open this week in and around the north end of the Kennedy Brothers building on North Main Street, an action made possible when on May 23 the Vergennes City Council signed off on the proposal.

The market plans to open this Thursday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. and operate during those hours every Thursday through Oct. 4. The market operated indoors at Kennedy Brothers this past winter.

Staging the huge Vergennes Memorial Day parade takes military precision

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Memorial Day Parade, a production of American Legion Post 14, is generally acknowledged as Vermont’s largest.

But according to Post 14 Service Officer and longtime parade organizer Henry Broughton, the parade got off to a humble start: It ran along just a short stretch of Main Street.

“It went from the memorial service down to the bridge,” said Broughton, now 85. “We only had two bands. We had a little band from the high school, and the Weeks School had a pretty good-sized band.”

Vergennes-area youths selected for Girls' State

VERGENNES — The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Vermont and Unit 14 of Vergennes will sponsor seven junior girls as delegates to Vermont Girls’ State, June 17-June 22, at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont.

Selectees include Ally Atkins, Anneke Boelens, Norah Deming, Peighton Duprey, Nora Hatch, and Anya Sonwaldt, from Vergennes Union High School and Kristin DeGraaf who is attending Rice Memorial High School.
