City Lions honor Long Trail owner

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Lions Club this summer recognized Michael DiPalermo, owner of Long Trail on the Falls Physical Therapy, for his assistance promoting Lions Club projects.

When the club was collecting “Toys for Kids” in December and “Food from the Heart” in February, DiPalermo gave tickets to folks bringing in items for the drives. At the end of the drives, a ticket was drawn giving one donor three months of free use of the facility equipment.

Local addiction treatment options expand: Services growing in three area towns

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County will soon see a substantial expansion of Medication Assisted Treatment services for locals who are addicted to narcotic painkillers. That treatment — which includes the prescribing of Suboxone — is now being offered in Middlebury and will soon take root in Vergennes.

And leaders of Mountain Health — a Federally Qualified Health Center in Bristol — confirmed that beginning next month it also will dispense Medically Assisted Treatment, known as MAT.

ADDISON COUNTY — Firefighters Robert Jenkins of Ferrisburgh and Brian Fraser of Vergennes bring different strengths to their respective departments. But they share at least one characteristic: dedication to service to their communities.

Jenkins’s and Fraser’s service and skills were recognized this month when the Vermont State Firefighters Association gave two of the organization’s top seven statewide awards to the these men.

Literacy foundation gives away books to combat 'summer slide'

VERGENNES — Dozens of children were grinning ear-to-ear recently as they perused stacks of glistening new books the Children’s Literacy Foundation, or CLiF, was giving away for free in Middlebury, Vergennes and Bristol.

That’s right, free.

As part of CLiF’s commitment to encourage summer reading, on Monday, July 24, the nonprofit held storytelling and book giveaways at community hubs in the county’s three largest population centers.

Vergennes Police Log: Man cited with assault on children

VERGENNES — On Monday Vergennes police cited 29-year-old Grand Isle resident David Pullman into court for domestic assault on two young children, an assault that allegedly occurred on July 16 in a Vergennes apartment.

The citation issued to Pullman followed an investigation conducted primarily by the Addison County Special Investigations Unit, with involvement from Vergennes, Milton and Winooski police, according to city police.

Meet the chef: Ian Huizenga of Hired Hand and Bar Antidote in Vergennes

This spring, Ian Huizenga, owner, head chef and brewer of Vergennes restaurants Hired Hand and Bar Antidote, received an unexpected phone call. On the other line, a member of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce informed him that’d he’d won a big award: Vermont’s 2017 Chef of the Year.

Vergennes officials adopt revised city plan

VERGENNES — After a second public hearing, the Vergennes City Council on July 18 adopted amendments to the city plan that would create a Solar Overlay District and related energy policies, fold the Vergennes Downtown-Basin Master Plan into the city plan, and ban ground-floor and basement apartments in the city’s Central Business District.

The Vergennes Planning Commission had written and then adopted the amendments in May after holding its own hearings.

Vergennes-based program offers bikes for foster kids

VERGENNES — What’s a more quintessential Vermont childhood experience than riding a bicycle in the summertime? Yet for more than 1,000 children within the state’s foster care system, having a bike of their own may not be the norm.

That’s why Vergennes used bike shop Little City Cycles founded Green Mountain Foster Bikes, a volunteer-run, non-profit program that refurbishes discarded bicycles and donates them to foster kids.

Kickstarter goal reached, Vergennes food market to open

VERGENNES — In mid-June, Vergennes couple Mona and Jon Sullivan turned to fundraising website Kickstarter as a way not only to obtain capital to add a downtown brick-and-mortar component to Provisionary Market, their online local-foods business, but also to learn whether demand existed for that expansion.
