Middlebury College computer science professor — and outdoors and nature writer — Matthew Dickerson spent June 6 through July 1 at Glacier National Park, surrounded by the majesty of the Rocky Mountains, as its official Artist in Residence.

Dickerson, a 54-year-old Bristol resident, has been an Addison Independent outdoors columnist for the past 20 years. He wrote four columns for us on his experience in the big sky country of Montana.

Andy Kirkaldy: Taconic Ramble is a walk in the park – literally

At this point in my career I consider a stroll through Buttolph Acres with our two dogs on a leash as a vigorous hike. If we’re ambitious we go for the loop all the way past the courthouse and tennis courts.

The Robert Frost Trail also offers a fine hike. Not only is it essentially flat and not much longer than a mile, but also the poems scattered along the way allow for pauses for “contemplation.”

My final week at Glacier National Park (GNP) arrives too soon: I still have two presentations to make and several interviews to do.

The first interview will be with United States Geological Survey (USGS) biologist Joe Giersch, who works with rare imperiled stoneflies, such as the small black Meltwater Stonefly that lives in streams just below melting glaciers. Populations can be as dense as 5,000 per square meter.

Karl Lindholm: Living in John Bower's House

Posted on July 6, 2017 |
By Karl Lindholm

John Bower, generally acknowledged as the greatest American Nordic skier, died on June 6 at age 76. He attended Middlebury College from 1959-63 and coached skiing at Middlebury from 1967-75. When Middlebury decided to honor its athletes with a Hall of Fame, Bower was inducted in the very first class of five alumni in 2013. We reprise today a column about John from 2002 that celebrates his remarkable career in skiing and my serendipitous connection to him. KL

I live in John Bower’s house.

Glacier National Park is a big beautiful place. At roughly the size of Rhode Island, it is one of the largest national parks in the United States. The world, by contrast, is small.

Andy Kirkaldy: Thoughts from the spring title season notebook

Posted on June 22, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

As photographer Trent Campbell and I drove back from Burlington after two exciting and successful finals on Monday the 12th we wondered if there had ever been as successful a season — as measured just by collective team championships in the scoreboard sports — as this spring for our four local high schools.

Matt Dickerson: Glacier National Park Diaries 1 — Reflections on water

Editor’s note: Matt Dickerson is an official artist in residence at Glacier National Park in Montana this month.

Like most visitors to Glacier National Park, I am awed by the majesty of the mountains: the splendor of towering peaks of bare stone, thrust upward by the collisions of continents, carved by glaciers, and still splotched with last winter’s snow.

Karl Lindholm: Rainy day game; sunny days ahead for Panther baseball

2017 NESCAC Baseball Champions — Middlebury College!

It had such a nice ring.

When I left the baseball field at Colby College on Saturday, May 14, I was confident the Panthers had won the NESCAC baseball title. That afternoon, Middlebury had defeated Tufts 5-1, after knocking off Bates the day before to be the only undefeated team in the double elimination NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference) tournament.

Matt Dickerson: Mosquitos and brook trout

Posted on June 1, 2017 |
By Matt Dickerson

The good news is that the brook trout were feeding. Hatching insects thickened the air above the water. Rising fish hammered aquatic insects as they emerged from the bottom of the stream, or later as they hovered low over the water, or later still as they fell back down on the surface to lay their eggs.

The bad news is that most of the insects were mosquitos, and some were black flies.

Andy Kirkaldy: At the Independent, all sports are appreciated

Posted on May 25, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

Last week I hung out for a while at the Middlebury College track. Middlebury Union High School was hosting Vergennes and three other teams at the only local high school track and field meet of the spring, and the weather was finally cooperating — mostly sunny and around 80 degrees with a pleasant breeze.

About the first thing that happened was Tiger senior Josh Girard popping a long jump. Turned out it was his personal best, and he broke 19 feet for the first time.
