Matt Dickerson: State parks and other outdoor activities for summer

Posted on August 18, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

We arose early to beat the oppressive August heat and humidity, strapped on our bike helmets, and headed out for a quick loop before breakfast. As it turned out, the early morning departure wasn’t necessary to beat the heat. Though only an hour and a half away from our house in Middlebury, the temperature on Grand Isle was 7 or 8 degrees cooler and the breeze coming off the lake wonderfully pleasant.

Karl Lindholm: 'A-ha! moments' and The Cuban Giants

Karl Lindholm col with larry.jpg

Some time ago, spring 2003, I was doing research in the Sheldon Museum in town, looking at newspapers, the Middlebury Register, from the 1880s and ’90s.

I had been asked by Andy Wentink, the archivist at the Sheldon at the time, to prepare something on baseball as part of a series on Recreation and Leisure in Addison County in the 19th century.

It was interesting work, but something of needle-in-the-haystack research. I was looking for the earliest references to baseball in the Register.

Matt Dickerson: Reflections on catching native and invasive trout

Posted on August 3, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

Matt Dickerson DSC02630 (1).JPG

There I was again, having spent three days traveling along beautiful Wyoming trout water without a chance to actually wet my line, just as I had the previous week (and in my previous column). Only this time it was in the Shoshone National Forest and Yellowstone National Park, rather than the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Andy Kirkaldy: Failure to ban Russia shows money talking

“Follow the money.”

– Advice from the then anonymous Deep Throat source advising Washington Postreporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward during the 1970s Watergate Scandal

“It is increasingly difficult to comprehend why the IOC, WADA, the IAAF and other major bodies opted to ignore evidence of systematic wrong-doing. Alternatively it is easy to comprehend, if you conclude that actually they don’t really care about doping as long as the dollars continue to flow.”

Matt Dickerson: Wild Wyoming cutthroat trout

Posted on July 21, 2016 |

Matt Dickerson col Cutthroat trout in Wyoming_4864.JPG

I’d been in Wyoming six days with barely a chance to wet my line. It was not for a lack of good-looking water. With the exception of a six-hour trip across a flat roasting high-altitude desert, I’d been crossing or driving alongside one beautiful river after another. Lovely. Enticing. And a bit frustrating since I was looking at them through a car window and not in my waders.

Karl Lindholm: A passion for golf, friends and travel

Posted on July 7, 2016 |
By Karl Lindholm

I never played golf in St. Andrews in Scotland, but I was able go there a number of times as a part of my job at Middlebury College.

On my first visit, I took a taxi from the train station to the university right in the middle of town with other study abroad advisers from Williams and Mt. Holyoke. I sat in the passenger seat and chatted with the driver. “The birthplace of golf . . . I can’t wait to see the Old Course,” I said to the cabbie. “Where is it? Nearby?”

Matt Dickerson: The balm of brook trout

Posted on June 30, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

Dickerson fishing9826.jpg

It began with a trip to a river I have been fishing since I was 13 years old: the Little Androscoggin.

My school career began with kindergarten in the little Maine village of Bryant Pond, whose two thriving lumber mills helped support a population of 1,000, spread out over three villages in the town of Woodstock. Our house was just over the tracks and a good outfielder’s throw from the Little League field with the classic wooden grandstand that my fellow Independent sports columnist Karl Lindholm, who grew up less than an hour away, still remembers.

Andy Kirkaldy: Just a couple things that make you go hmmm...

Time for just a couple thoughts for the summer solstice.

I do believe the Cleveland Cavaliers deserved their victory over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday, and congratulations to the long-suffering fans of Northeast Ohio.

It’s been well-documented Cleveland’s last major championship came in 1964. There’s been plenty of heartbreak since then.

Matt Dickerson: A first run-in with a Vermont bowfin

Posted on June 16, 2016 |
By Matt Dickerson

Recently, I was reminded (yet again) of what amazing, abundant, and diverse fishing opportunities are available to anglers in Vermont. Within a short drive of Addison County one can find brook, brown, and rainbow trout in dozens of rivers and streams, and several mountain ponds. There are salmon and lake trout in Champlain and some inland lakes. Pike and smallmouth thrive in the bigger rivers and many ponds. You can also find muskies, walleye, perch, largemouth bass, fallfish and bullhead.

Karl Lindholm: Noon hoops and howling at the moon

I begged my kids to come to Middlebury sporting events with me.

When a dad takes his kids to a game, he’s a good dad. If he goes by himself and leaves the kids at home, he’s borderline selfish.
