Victor Nuovo: Burke on the Social Contract

Posted on April 26, 2018 |
By Victor Nuovo

Nuovo, Victor ONLINE.jpg

Editor’s note: This is the 12th in a series of essays about political liberalism and conservatism and the two-party system.

As a conservative, Burke believed the civil state is necessary to human welfare. It is an existential necessity. He allowed for no prior state of nature in which, even hypothetically, human animals might exist let alone flourish. Nor did he allow for any independent standpoint of reason from which free persons might enter into fundamental agreements.

Note of appreciation: Lions & Knights stock food shelf

Posted on April 26, 2018 |
By Jeanne L. Montross

Thanks to the hard work of two local organizations, the food shelf at HOPE has been restocked. The Middlebury Lions Club conducted their annual Food from the Heart food drive on Saturday, March 31, and the Knights of Columbus, at St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury, conducted a food collection during the season of Lent.

Thanks to both these efforts, hungry families coming to HOPE will find a great stock of food from which to select.

Letter to the editor: Tick bite yields very large bill

Posted on April 26, 2018 |
By Kris Diehl

On October 16th last year, I was visiting my in-laws in Cornwall and was bitten by a tick. I am a New York City resident and not aware of proper care for this. My mother-in-law insisted I go just up the road to the Emergency Room at Porter Medical Center behind Middlebury College.

Letter to the editor: Middlebury traffic pattern should be altered

Posted on April 26, 2018 |
By Spence Putnam

With the closure of five more downtown parking spaces (near Triangle Park), the parking situation in the center of the Middlebury business district has reached truly crisis proportions, with potentially catastrophic results for local businesses. I have what I think is a simple, straightforward, and inexpensive suggestion which could do a great deal to alleviate this problem, at least until both Merchants Row and Main Street are closed completely in year three of the project.

Verde Monts. “Pulsatingly verdant mountains.” That is what Champlain saw in 1609 when he paddled up the lake that now bears his name. He must have loved seeing Camel’s Hump in all of her sylvan glory!

Letter to the editor: Massage therapists upset by unethical practitioner

Posted on April 23, 2018 |
By Addison County massage therapists

We have a thriving community of massage therapists in Addison County. We care about each other and want the best for our clients.

On April 16, we learned that a practitioner in Middlebury was charged with unethical behavior and has been shut down. Collectively, we feel pain and outrage on behalf of the people negatively impacted by his actions. When one therapist behaves unprofessionally, it not only harms people directly, it can dissuade others from utilizing massage as a pathway to healing and wellness.

Letter to the editor: Domestic abusers pose lethal threats to victims

Posted on April 23, 2018 |
By Hazel Bee Stoddard

I think more people need to know about domestic assault. If we don’t make laws about it we will have more and more death and suicide. More people need to know about this issue.

Letter to the editor: Room for local department store?

Posted on April 23, 2018 |
By Ian Ross

“I miss Lazarus!” I heard this statement while waiting for a school concert to start a couple months ago. I personally grew up with Montgomery Ward in Fair Haven, Vt., and I can say that I miss Montgomery Ward. I also enjoyed having Ames in walking distance when my family moved to Middlebury in the mid-1990s. How I lamented the closure of Ames in 2002. Since then, the nearest department stores have been in Rutland City and in Chittenden County.

Clippings: Words at the heart of what we do

Posted on April 19, 2018 |
By Christopher Ross

Christopher Ross 3225.jpg

It’s been more than two months since I began reporting for the Addison Independent, and I’m now scraping the bottom of the “movies about newspapers” barrel.

Take “His Girl Friday” (1940), whose “journalists” reflect so badly on their profession someone thought it prudent to open the film with a disclaimer: “You will see in this picture no resemblance to the men and women of the press today,” it cautions. It takes place in “the ‘dark ages’ of the newspaper game.”
