Ways of Seeing by Cheryl Mitchell: London visit gives new perspective

Posted on November 21, 2018 |

As I write this column we are staying in London for the opening of HadesTown, our daughter’s folk opera. The play is a revisitation of the Orpheus and Eurydice Myth that explores a world gone wrong as a result of greed, fear and dehumanizing the “other.” Although written more than a decade ago, the play is eerily resonant with current day America. It’s signature song “Why we build the wall’” echoes the controversy here over Brexit.

Jessie Raymond: Lily the hunter plays with her prey

Posted on November 21, 2018 |
By Jessie Raymond

jessenew ONLINE.jpg

They’re back.

The area mice have left their summer homes out in the field and have come indoors to spend the winter behind the walls of our old house. At night we can hear them rearranging their little matchbox tables and thread spool chairs.

When I think of them that way, they seem quite sweet.

Except they also sneak into our kitchen, stealing crumbs and cavorting in the drawers, nibbling on latex gloves and old wine corks. They hoard birdseed in the dishtowel drawer. Last year, they chewed through the water line that runs our icemaker.

Greg Dennis: Gratitude for all things local

Posted on November 21, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

As far as I can tell, only Americans, Canadians and Liberians have a holiday dedicated to the general giving of thanks.

So as the seas rise, the weather gets weird, and the president tries to make a mockery of our democracy, it’s a good time to remember those things for which we can be thankful.

Everyone has a list of the profoundly personal things that merit our gratitude. But what of those things we share? We, that is, who live in this quirky county that stretches from the west coast of New England to the snowy spine of the Green Mountains.

Letter to the editor: Giving thanks to our farmers

Posted on November 21, 2018 |
By Anson Tebbetts

The autumn harvest is complete and the season for giving thanks is here. Thanksgiving offers time for family and friends to reconnect, pause and enjoy a few hours together over a meal. As we picture our nation’s fields, forests and barns and the people who work within them, we thank our Vermont farmers for our bounty.

Letter to the editor: Saving planet means sacrifices

Posted on November 21, 2018 |
By Carolyn Van Vleck

I read the group letter re: climate change with interest. While I agree with the gist of the content, I have one question to pose: What are you willing to give up?

I’m a Baby Boomer. I grew up in the age of technology, that being basically the second half of the 1900s. What was invented during that century was mindboggling, fantastic, impressive and the beginning of the end of human life on Earth, quite possibly.

Note of appreciation: VUHS play crew thankful for support

Posted on November 21, 2018 |
By Jolie Gramling

The cast and crew of “Anything Goes” would like to thank some special local businesses for their generosity of props, publicity and financial support for our weekend shows at Vergennes Union High School. It was a grand success and we could not do this without the local community support of all our musical endeavors! You’re the TOP!

A special shout out to: Bixby Memorial Free Library, Neat Repeats, Sweet Charity and ReSource Store in Williston.

With gratitude,

Letter to the editor: Hydro issue deserved 'fair and balanced' coverage

Posted on November 19, 2018 |
By Anders Holm

The Holm family very much appreciates the Nov. 15 article in the Addison Independent as it portrays a sense of urgency regarding the hydroelectric project at the Otter Creek Falls in Middlebury that has seemingly been absent for many years. American journalists are typically held to an ethical standard of delivering fair and balanced news. Denying a party the right to voice their opinion equally in a piece is known commonly as propaganda. Uncorroborated and out of context quotes are insufficient so I am hopeful this will be our chance to have our thoughts heard in earnest.

Opinion: Education beyond high school matters

Posted on November 15, 2018 |
By Jeb Spaulding

It’s true, not everyone needs to go to college. But consider this — over 95 percent of the jobs created since the Great Recession ten years ago have gone to workers with at least some college education, according to Georgetown University, while those with a high school diploma were left behind. The recession decimated low-skill, blue-collar and clerical jobs; the recovery added primarily high-skill, managerial and professional jobs.

Ways of Seeing by Laurie Cox: Togetherness is a formula for civility

Posted on November 15, 2018 |
By Laurie Cox

Cox, laurie.jpg

On the last Saturday in October, 28 people gathered near the Ripton Fire Station to split and stack firewood. As snowflakes (and, later, raindrops) shared the air, workers filled up the woodshed for REAP, the Ripton Energy Assistance Project. This project was formed in 2008 at a time when the economy had tanked, fuel prices soared, and fuel assistance programs were underfunded. Ripton’s response was to set up a non-profit to help fill the gaps. Saturday’s “wood bee” was an event that has taken place every year since then.

Eric Davis: Democrats made big election gains

Posted on November 15, 2018 |
By Eric Davis

Davis, Eric May 2018.jpg

As fuller results from last week’s elections are received, the magnitude of Democratic success is becoming more apparent.

Democratic candidates now appear poised to gain close to 40 seats in the House, which would give the Democrats 235 House seats to the Republicans’ 200. This would represent the largest Democratic seat gain in a midterm election since 1974, an election held less than three months after Richard Nixon resigned from the presidency over Watergate.
