New Haven road to be closed June 17-24

NEW HAVEN — Campground Road in New Haven is scheduled to be closed to through traffic at the rail crossing beginning Saturday, June 17,  at 7 a.m. while the rail crossing is upgraded.

This closure is scheduled to last seven consecutive days until June 24.

Meet the Chef: V Smiley returns to family farm in New Haven, runs small-batch preserves business

At the tender age of 11, V Smiley wanted to be the fashion editor at Vogue.

After graduating with a degree in art history and English from St. Mary's College in Maryland, she wanted to be part of the Los Angeles arts scene.

Now the 31-year-old is back home on the family farm in New Haven with her mom Susan and her partner Amy, making preserves with fruit, honey and aromatics.

Smiley's a dreamer, to the core.

Police issue drunk driving citation to woman found in car on RR track

NEW HAVEN — Vermont State Police cited Mary Mendoza, 33, of Weybridge for driving under the influence (first offense) on Tuesday, May 30, after she allegedly drove off Route 7 and onto the train tracks at the junction of Route 17 in New Haven at around 11 p.m.

Police allege Mendoza had driven an estimated 50 feet along the rail line before her vehicle got stuck, according to a press release issued by VSP Capt. Michael Manley and Sgt. Aaron McNeil.

Police chase suspect in lawn mower theft

MIDDLEBURY / NEW HAVEN — Several police agencies combined captured a man who allegedly drove away from a Middlebury store without paying for a lawn mower last week.

Michael Francis, 56, of Colchester reportedly stole a push mower from in front of the Sears store on Exchange Street around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16.

Middlebury police allege Francis loaded the mower into a 2005 Ford Explorer and then sped off.

Support group for adults with ADHD to begin meeting May 11

NEW HAVEN — A support group for adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, better known as ADHD, is forming. It will hold its first meeting on Thursday, May 11, from 6-30-8:30 p.m., in New Haven at 87 Rivers Bend Road (the Sapphire Center building).

Adults with ADHD or those close to someone with ADHD are welcome to attend.

Fire depts. seek new ways to fill up rosters

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County firefighters have joined a statewide effort to develop a much shorter certification process for aspiring volunteer firefighters, figuring the current requirement of more than 200 training hours is one of several factors that have been thwarting recruitment efforts.

Area fire chiefs also vowed to organize a “job fair” to reach potential volunteers in an effort to fill the dwindling ranks of local fire departments.

Mount Abe School board needs Starksboro, New Haven, Bristol members

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union officials are alerting residents of Bristol, New Haven and Starksboro that there are openings on the Mount Abraham Union High School Board for members from each of those three towns.

Current school members of the local school boards in each own would like candidates interested in filling these spots to step forward by end of day Monday, April 17, so they could fill those openings on Tuesday.

NEW HAVEN — Perhaps nowhere in Vermont has siting of solar power arrays generated as much controversy as in New Haven.

The town’s sweeping open fields and hosting of a substation that feeds into VELCO’s high-voltage transmission lines (the ones that move energy across towns, states and regions) have made it a magnet for commercial solar power development. Large solar arrays now stand in some fields that once hosted cows and crops.
