Middlebury seeks to contain increases in municipal budget

Posted on December 5, 2016 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard last week looked at the first draft of a proposed 2017-2018 town budget that would require $7,323,684 to be raised in local property taxes, which would in turn require a 4.2-cent hike in the current municipal tax rate of 97.8 cents per $100 in assessed value.

It was 1976 and Michael Egan had discovered glass blowing, an art he would someday master.

Posted on December 5, 2016 |
By John Flowers

CherryWood9376.jpg

SALISBURY — Town Hall Theater officials are giving area woodworkers a plum assignment using some well-seasoned cherry planks. It’s pretty straightforward; use the wood to make a fine piece of furniture or artwork, have it displayed at the Middlebury theater, and then harvest 50 percent of the proceeds once it is sold.

The other half of the sales price will go to the theater to help fortify its operating budget.
