Middlebury in the spotlight as film festival hits screens today

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury takes the regional movie spotlight this week with its hosting of the 3rd Annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (MNFF), which runs Thursday, Aug. 24, to Sunday, Aug. 27.

Hundreds of young directors and cinema enthusiasts have booked rooms and made restaurant reservations, and will be shopping at area stores while they partake in a menu of more than 90 features, shorts and documentaries that will be shown during the festival and will be considered for “VTeddy” awards.

Discover something new at the film festival

Festivals provide us with the equivalent of extra holidays.  They allow us to suspend business as usual and take time off from work or our daily routine to discover the unexpected. We get to see friends in a new setting or catch up with people we haven’t seen for a while. Maybe we punctuate our comings and goings with a shared meal or hot fudge sundae.

Carol's owner opens a diner on Route 7

Drive between Middlebury and Vergennes, and you’ll probably notice the little red diner on the east side of Route 7 a couple miles north of New Haven Junction. Surrounded by a large gravel lot, passers-by might not be sure what to expect of the restaurant. But John Melanson, owner of Carol’s Hungry Mind, Middlebury’s neighborhood coffee shop, is inviting newcomers to grab a cup of joe at his new Route 7 location, or to come and sit down for a full meal.

Middlebury Police Log: Authorities investigating alleged sexual misconduct

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Aug. 14 launched an investigation into allegations of sexual contact initiated by a boy toward a local girl.

Police said the Vermont Department for Children and Families asked them to investigate the matter.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Received a report on Aug. 13 that a local woman had posted on social media that she wanted to harm herself. Police made sure the woman was taken to a family member’s residence.

It's all fun and games for seniors who stay active

MIDDLEBURY — On a recent Tuesday morning at Project Independence, the Blueberries tennis team relied on winners from all seven members, including overheads and drop shots from Mary Wedge, Margaret Hutchins and Tillie Brown, to defeat Ken Schoen, 7-0, 4-7, 7-3.

The match was held in the ground-floor dining room at Elderly Services Inc. in Middlebury.

Middlebury plans for passenger rail service

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury has received a $15,000 grant to pin down a location for a new rail platform slated to serve passenger trains that could stop here beginning as soon as 2020.

Part 1 of rail bridge project done; businesses wary of 'big dig'

MIDDLEBURY — Downtown Middlebury merchants are assessing the economic fall-out from the recently completed installation of temporary bridges on Merchants Row and Main Street. Business owners located closest to the construction zones predictably reported the most substantial losses, while virtually all of those polled by the Independent praised the town and Kubricky construction for their outreach during the project.

Middlebury street sweeping scheduled for Aug. 21-25

MIDDLEBURY — Town of Middlebury workers are scheduled to clean streets this week.

Street sweeping in the downtown area will take place Monday-Friday, Aug. 21-25, weather permitting. Work hours will be from 9 p.m.-5 a.m.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to refrain from overnight parking on downtown area streets.

Those with questions or concerns are asked to contact the town of Middlebury Highway Department at 388-4045.

Mill Street parking lot to be closed for six days

MIDDLEBURY — The Mill Street Parking Lot in downtown Middlebury will be closed from Monday, Aug. 24, through Tuesday, Aug. 29, so work on the continued improvements to the parking lot can continue. These improvements include new lighting installation, stormwater upgrades, fresh landscaping and paving.

Town officials said this work will result in heightened noise and truck traffic along with parking impacts. The actual paving will be scheduled at a later date after all other work has been completed.
