Funky, fermented artist turns labels into art

Have you ever really looked at the labels of products you use every day? Try it sometime, you might be surprised. Sure some labels never vary from their branding, but on other products you’ll see the thoughtful work of artists that changes over time.

Take for example Mike Kin. He’s been drawing the labels for Aqua ViTea Kombucha since their first batch in 2007.

Middlebury floats small town budget increase

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents at town meeting will consider a fiscal year 2019 municipal budget of $10,574,426, of which $7,331,905 would be raised through local property taxes. It’s a proposed spending plan that would result in an increase of about one-third of one penny in the community’s current municipal rate of 98.2 cents.

One penny on Middlebury’s property tax rate raises roughly $75,000.

Third anti-racism film to be screened in Middlebury next week

MIDDLEBURY — The third installment of the anti-racism film series Seeing Color/Seeking Justice, sponsored by Middlebury Showing up For Racial Justice (SURJ), will screen on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 4 and 7 p.m. at the Marquis Theater. “Whose Streets?” depicts the unrest and activism in Ferguson, Missouri, in the wake of the police shooting of Michael Brown.

Rutland man convicted of sex related crimes in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A Rutland man was convicted last week of several offenses involving a Middlebury child.

After a four-day trial at the Addison Superior Court, criminal division, a jury on Jan. 23 found Jason Dukette, 38, of Rutland attempted lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, possession of child pornography, and indecent material to a minor.

MUHS maintains 15 slots for 'school choice'

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School next year will continue to serve 15 students from surrounding districts as part of the state’s limited public school choice program.

The Addison Central School District board last week agreed to preserve the 15 slots, which are consistently all spoken for by students from the adjacent Addison Northwest and Mount Abraham union school districts. Bill Lawson, principal of MUHS, said there are typically three or four more applicants than there are available slots, thus triggering a lottery.

School task force working on racism report

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District’s new Task Force on Racism, Bias and Discrimination has been granted a time extension through May to develop a series of recommendations to help address any “explicit and implicit bias” in Middlebury-area schools.

The committee, led by Middlebury Union Middle School Principal Kristin Holsman-Francoeur and Middlebury College Chief Diversity Officer Miguel Fernandez, was originally slated to issue its final report in January.

MIDDLEBURY — Historian and filmmaker Douglas Blackmon will discuss his film and Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “Slavery by Another Name,” in a talk at Ilsley Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 7:00 p.m. His talk of the same name is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public. (Note: This talk takes place on a special date on a Thursday.)

MIDDLEBURY — Bread Loaf Corporation (BLC) of Middlebury has been awarded the 2017 Association of General Contractors of Vermont (AGC/VT) Honor Award for the University of Vermont Alumni House and Jack and Shirley Silver Pavilion Project.

BLC’s team of designers and contractors were honored for the design, interior restoration and expansion of the former Edward Wells house, a grand Queen Anne Style mansion located at the corner of Maple and Summit Streets in Burlington.

Vote warned for $36.7 million ACSD budget

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District board on Monday unanimously agreed to present Middlebury-area voters with a $36,762,479 spending plan to cover public school expenses in the seven district-member towns. This budget reflects a 1.32-percent spending decrease and would result in elimination of more than 20 full-time-equivalent jobs.
