Cheese plant officials eye $100K in energy savings

MIDDLEBURY — A new partnership between Vermont Gas and several of its energy partners has helped Agri-Mark’s Cabot cheese plant in Middlebury significantly reduce its energy consumption, reducing overall environmental impact and reducing the cost of running the facility.

MIDDLEBURY — Fine art photographer Gary Hall was exposed to the craft from an early age back in the 1960s. “My father was constantly taking family photos and documenting our trips,” Hall said. Growing up in Charlotte, he was fascinated by the beauty of changing light on Lake Champlain, and wanted to capture those moments and scenes to share with others. 

As a boy scout, 16-year-old Hall remembers the moment he knew he'd be a photographer.

Found remains ID'd as Korean woman

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police have released the name of the woman whose human remains were found in woods off Route 7 in Middlebury on Oct. 21.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Vermont identified the remains as those of Sun Mi Shin, a 28-year-old Korean woman from Fairfax, Va.

Meet Chef Noi. That means “little chef” in Thai, “but he’s not little,” joked Noi’s wife, Tip. And she’s right, Chef Noi (officially named Thammarong Uttamang) is anything but little. He not only has a large stature, but also a large heart and large dreams. Chef Noi and Tip (who’s real name isn’t Tip, it’s Taphatsnun Sinpaksawat) moved to Middlebury five years ago with the hopes of running their own restaurant.

Vt. Community Foundation names Wheeler as board chair

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Community Foundation has named James “Jake” G. Wheeler, Jr. chair of its board of directors. Wheeler was elected to the board in 2009 and has served as vice chair for the last two years. The Vermont Community Foundation Board of Directors is elected by the Foundation’s 150 members.

Middlebury group launches fight over downtown RR bridges

MIDDLEBURY — A group of downtown Middlebury property owners and merchants are asking Vermont Agency of Transportation Secretary Chris Cole to abandon the current $40-million, 4-year plan to replace the community’s two downtown rail bridges. They want to shift to a more basic project they contend could produce two new spans within around three months for approximately $5 million.

Black Lives Matter messenger challenges young people at Middlebury College

MIDDLEBURY — Journalist and Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King told a standing-room-only Mead Chapel crowd on Tuesday evening that America is in a historic “dip” from which to recover will require a major commitment, especially from young people like the Middlebury College students who flocked to see him.

King, for the past year the New York Daily News senior justice writer and before then a journalist for the Daily Kos website, said racism is part of the nation’s DNA, but through work change can be made.

Citizens move to block Middlebury RR project until environmental concerns answered

MIDDLEBURY — A lawyer representing Middlebury residents and property owners has raised questions about the environmental impact of a proposed rail replacement and bridge project in downtown Middlebury and seeks to sideline the $40 million project, which has been in the planning stages for more than a decade.
