College to launch new summer environmental studies program

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College is world-renowned for its summer Language Schools and the Bread Loaf School of English. Starting next year, the college will add one more intensive summer program to its portfolio: a six-week, interdisciplinary, “full-engagement” School of the Environment, which will bring students, faculty and guest speakers from around the world to Vermont.

Slaughterhouse updates its plan to move to Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Livestock has at least temporarily put on hold plans to build a new slaughterhouse and meat-cutting facility in Middlebury’s industrial park, and is instead seeking to move those operations into an existing building in that same area.

The Ferrisburgh-based company has filed an application with Middlebury’s planning office calling for Vermont Livestock to redevelop and occupy approximately two-thirds of the 31,174-square-foot building at 183 Industrial Ave., owned by Anthony Neri.

Middlebury's Watson is set to ride into the sunset

MIDDLEBURY — As administrative secretary at the Middlebury Department of Public Works, Verna Watson has often helped direct work crews to local roads in need of repairs.

But after 33 years on the job, Watson, 69, is herself ready to hit the road. She’ll be retiring at the end of this month with plans to explore the country with her husband, Al, on their Spyder three-wheeler as members of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club.

'God of Carnage' coming to Town Hall Theater

Plan forged for new Middlebury town offices, gym with college help

MUHS student leaders urge peers to connect, excell

MIDDLEBURY — Spirits were high on Saturday morning as the Middlebury Union High School class of 2013 gathered together at the Memorial Sports Center to graduate. The commencement ceremony, which featured a mix of tradition and originality, started with droning bagpipes, played by senior Duncan Mathewson, leading the teachers to their seats. Afterward the graduating class was called in by Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” played by the MUHS band.

Middlebury launches retail study

MIDDLEBURY — The Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) has launched a yearlong study of retail options in the community. It will allow residents to again weigh in on the controversial topic of big-box stores, while at the same time help local officials identify the town’s current shopping voids and how they could be filled in a way that would not compromise the community’s rural character.
