School board ballots expand in response to Act 46

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury-area voters will see a lot more names than usual on their Town Meeting Day ballots this year. That’s because the Addison Central Supervisory Union is pursuing a unified school district under Act 46, which means a brand new, 13-member school board will need to be elected. And that’s in addition to positions on the current elementary and UD-3 school boards that will have to be filled to ensure a smooth transition for the new panel.

DRB to consider airport runway extension

Folklife center names gingerbread house winners

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Folklife Center in Middlebury has announced the winners of its 17th annual gingerbread house competition, held in December. Staff report that well over a thousand visitors came to see the display.

This year’s (optional) theme was “Folklore: Emoji, Rainbow Unicorns and Lolcats,” which celebrated contemporary, electronic creativity by bringing it off screens and into the real world — as gingerbread.

Group recognizes college chaplain for community building

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Women in Higher Education (VWHE) on Dec. 21, 2015, awarded its annual scholarship to Associate Chaplain Naila Baloch at Middlebury College’s Scott Center for Spiritual and Religious Life.

The scholarship, named after Lyndon State College’s former president Carol A. Moore, recognizes women working in Vermont higher education who aspire to advance their careers. In its 11th year of supporting women in their professional endeavors, this scholarship awards up to $1,000.

Powerhouse 'MLK Today' chorus to honor civil rights leader

MIDDLEBURY — This Martin Luther King Day, when members of the college and local communities gather in Middlebury College’s Mead Chapel to celebrate King’s legacy, they will also celebrate the return of guest director Keith McCutchen and his powerhouse MLK Today Choir. The “MLK Today” event on Monday, Jan. 18, will mark McCutchen’s second appearance at Middlebury as conductor of the group, a community choir of students and townspeople.

Hockey fans to try for a 'perfect sort'

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College ice hockey fans will face a different sort of challenge this weekend.

As the men’s team faces off against longtime rival Plattsburgh State in Chip Kenyon Arena this Friday evening and the Panther women take on Endicott College on Saturday afternoon, fans will be challenged to improve their performance on a somewhat obscure but nonetheless very important statistic: the sort.

New town liaison to help with railroad bridge construction

MIDDLEBURY — The Town of Middlebury has hired Middlebury resident Jim Gish to serve as community liaison for the upcoming project to replace two downtown bridges. The newly created position is responsible for providing timely and accurate information on the project to town residents and businesses, to the media, and to town visitors. The part-time, temporary position is funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the Vermont Agency of Transportation.

Free screening for breast cancer offered in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Since 1990, Porter Hospital has been providing free screening mammograms to area women who do not qualify for the “Ladies First” program or who have high-deductible insurance plans.

Thanks to a recent grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and in concert with the Ladies First program and the Open Door Clinic, Porter has secured additional resources to offer even more free mammograms to women during the month of January.

Skate with the Panther hockey teams

MIDDLEBURY — Fans of Middlebury College hockey will have a chance to rub elbows with the players in the coming weeks, when team boosters will sponsor Skate with the Panthers events after a couple of home games.

Skate with the Panther Women will take place in the Kenyon Arena on Saturday, Jan. 16, from 5-6 p.m. Fans young and old are invited to join the Middlebury College women’s hockey team on the ice after their 3 p.m. game vs. Endicott. Panther team pictures will be provided so fans can have Panthers autograph them.

Progress made on Midd. RR bridges: VTrans offers new specifics on project

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Agency of Transportation officials planning the replacement of Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges confirm that a related parking garage and the relocation of a public transit bus stop will be covered under the estimated $40 million project budget, but no funds are being earmarked for assisting local merchants who might lose business during construction.
