Contractors compete for Middlebury tunnel work

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials on Nov. 19 interviewed three New York-based companies competing for the right to serve as general contractor for the upcoming replacement of the downtown railroad overpasses on Merchants Row and Main Street.

The three companies in the running include:

•  Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors Inc. of Glenmont, N.Y.

•  Tetra Tech Construction of Gloversville, N.Y.

UD-3 board sees hope in Creek Road site for new town gym

MIDDLEBURY — A committee charged with planning Middlebury’s new recreation center expects to decide by Dec. 10 whether to recommend the town build the facility off Mary Hogan Drive as originally proposed, or designate a 2.4-acre parcel off Creek Road as the new preferred site.

New Warren Miller ski film to screen at Town Hall Theater

MIDDLEBURY — Warren Miller has created 64 action-packed films that follow skiers and snowboarders to some of the most exotic places in the world. The series has an enormous international following, and will make its Middlebury debut with a screening of the latest film, “Ticket to Ride,” at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury on Thursday, Dec. 5, with doors opening at 7 p.m.

Immigrant workers trapped in limbo

Consulate provides services to Mexican nationals here

MIDDLEBURY— More than 150 Mexican farm laborers on Saturday came to a mobile consulate event hosted by the Mexican government in Middlebury. For the event, diplomats from the Mexican consulate in Boston came to Vermont to help Mexican nationals in the area get passports and other government-issued documents.

Physician escapes Phillipine typhoon

MIDDLEBURY — Dr. Kristofer Anderson became accustomed to the raucous rainstorms that would pop up almost every afternoon while volunteering his medical services earlier this month in the small village of Santa Fe, on the island of Leyte in the Philippines.

Little did the Middlebury-based physician know that those rainstorms would be a prelude to the cataclysmic deluge wrought by Yolanda, a category 5 typhoon that killed thousands of Filipinos and leveled entire villages during its scourge.

Committee girds for information blitz on Middlebury town office proposal

MIDDLEBURY — For the past 12 years, artist Carolyn Letvin has been engaged in a dialogue with sheep, with them becoming her primary source of imagery. She reasons that sheep are often one of the first images presented in life, between nursery rhymes, children’s stories and nursery room motifs, creating formative visual experiences. Perhaps, she muses, we count sheep our whole lives?
