Locals weigh in on bridge work: Middlebury to share results of new survey

MIDDLEBURY — At its Tuesday meeting, the Middlebury selectboard received an update on the downtown Middlebury rail bridges project. Jim Gish, community liaison for the $52 million project, said he will soon release results of a recent survey on local folks’ reactions to the new temporary bridges on Merchants Row and Main Street. Gish said 250 people responded to the report, with a majority expressing positive reactions to the construction and related communication this past summer.

Community Conversations' series resumes this Sunday, Oct. 15, with panel on climate justice

MIDDLEBURY — “Climate Justice: Assuring Fair Access for all Vermonters to a Clean and Healthy Environment” will be the topic of the next in a series Community Conversations held at the Middlebury Congregational Church, sponsored by Andy Nagy-Benson and Emily Joselson.

This event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 15, from 4-5:30 p.m., with a panel including Maeve McBride, director of the statewide environmental organization 350VT, Ingrid Pixley, board member of the Addison County Community Trust, and Marc Cesario, co-owner of Meeting Place Farm in Cornwall.

Folklife center hires new education director

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Rizos is the newest staff member to join the dedicated crew at the Vermont Folklife Center. As Education Director, she leads the team in developing outreach to Vermont schools and organizes and conducts workshops in documentary work at the center’s Middlebury headquarters and around the state.

Chamber of Commerce makes change in membership dues

MIDDLEBURY — With a desire to better serve its members, the Addison County Chamber of Commerce is changing the way its members will invest. The Chamber is converting its membership dues model from one based on number of employees (fair share) to a model that’s based on benefits (tiers).

Middlebury Police Log: Man cited after violating abuse prevention order

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited David Warner, 66, of Middlebury for allegedly violating an abuse prevention order on Oct. 2.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated an Oct. 2 report about some intoxicated men allegedly causing problems in the new park off College Street, leaving trash on the ground and breaking glass. Police were able to locate a few of these men and turned them over to a sober person.

Childcare provision seen as inadequate: Offerings for youngest said to fall short

MIDDLEBURY — Child advocacy groups estimate that more than 79 percent of Vermont’s infants and toddlers likely to need child care don’t have access to programs considered to be high quality. For Addison County, the estimate is 88 percent for infants, 64 percent for toddlers.

Tree expert will guide visitors through foliage walk at college this weekend

MIDDLEBURY — Celebrate “Fabulous Fall Foliage” with a walk along the Trail Around Middlebury, sponsored by the Middlebury Area Land Trust. This hour-and-a half walk will be led by tree expert Tim Parsons, Middlebury College’s Landscape Horticulturist.

For Parsons, who is also a Vermont Certified Horticulturist and certified by the International Society of Aboriculture, fall foliage speaks to the tree’s life cycle.
