Ferrisburgh makes final plans for town charter

Posted on February 27, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard plans to review its proposed town charter with voters at Ferrisburgh’s annual town meeting, and the board will also recommend to residents that hearing and vote dates on the charter be set for as soon in the spring as possible, according to Selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence.

If residents agree, that could mean a charter adoption vote in early May, and the two town public hearings required by state law before the vote could be held in early and late April, with town-wide balloting to follow in early May.

NORTH FERRISBURGH — At their Feb. 21 meeting, members of the Ferrisburgh selectboard reviewed the latest response from the Agency of Transportation to the board’s request for a study of the Route 7-Stage Road intersection that could lead to its signalization.

Residents have petitioned the board to lobby VTrans for a light, and the board had even before gone back and forth with agency officials on the issue.

Ferrisburgh selectboard has charter ready to go

Posted on February 16, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents will probably vote as soon as this spring whether to approve the town’s first charter, one that would give the Ferrisburgh selectboard the power to appoint the town’s clerk and treasurer.

Elected officers now fill those positions, and selectboard members have not been pleased with the town treasurer’s job performance, but have said they have little recourse to deal with the issue because of his elected status.

FERRISBURGH — Two candidates who would be first-time selectmen are competing this winter for an opening on the Ferrisburgh selectboard, Dennis Armell and Rick Ebel. Ferrisburgh residents will choose between the two men in Australian balloting on March 7.

Armell and Ebel are seeking to replace Jim Warden, who will step down after 12 years on the selectboard. Meanwhile, incumbent Selectman Jim Benoit is running uncontested for re-election on the Town Meeting Day ballot.

Frederick Douglas.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — On this past Feb. 1, President Donald Trump kicked off Black History Month by acknowledging a few black leaders, including Frederick Douglass. “Frederick Douglass is an example of someone who’s done an amazing job,” Trump noted, “and is getting recognized more and more, I notice.”

The President’s remark left many listeners bewildered. “Does he think Douglass is still alive?” many wondered. Does he even know who Douglass was, let alone what his “amazing job” was?

FERRISBURGH — The Basin Harbor Club is making a major change to its Lake Champlain waterfront — replacing its combination of moorings and old cement and floating docks with new, modern floating docks to better accommodate boaters who want to tie up and stay overnight at the resort and enjoy its offerings.

The work, expected to be completed in time for the May opening of the club’s 131st season, is being done by another noted Ferrisburgh concern: Dock Doctors, headquartered on Route 7.

Ferrisburgh's municipal budget won't trigger tax hike

Posted on January 26, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard adopted a budget on Tuesday that if approved by residents on Town Meeting Day would barely move the town’s municipal tax rate, effectively cut the hours of the elected treasurer position from 35 to 20 per week, and allow the board to hire an extra part-time worker for the town office.

Board members also adopted a Town Meeting Day warning that will ask residents to make three other decisions: whether to buy a $190,000 truck, to change property tax payments to a quarterly schedule, and to create a $500 Conservation Fund.
