Ferrisburgh's municipal budget won't trigger tax hike

Posted on January 26, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard adopted a budget on Tuesday that if approved by residents on Town Meeting Day would barely move the town’s municipal tax rate, effectively cut the hours of the elected treasurer position from 35 to 20 per week, and allow the board to hire an extra part-time worker for the town office.

Board members also adopted a Town Meeting Day warning that will ask residents to make three other decisions: whether to buy a $190,000 truck, to change property tax payments to a quarterly schedule, and to create a $500 Conservation Fund.

Ferrisburgh board planning to cut treasurer hours

Posted on January 23, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard is moving toward cutting hours for the position of town treasurer as it prepares its 2017-2018 budget, the latest sign of its discontent with the work of town’s elected incumbent treasurer.

The board also on Jan. 17 discussed with its auditor what he called accounting deficiencies, and changed the town’s credit card policy to give the board, not the treasurer, the authority to issue or cancel town credit cards or make changes on cards being used by cardholders.

FERRISBURGH — The proposed in-town move of Ferrisburgh trucking firm J.A. DeVos and Sons Inc. to Tuppers Crossing drew fire at a Dec. 7 Board of Zoning Adjustment hearing from some area residents, who said it was a poor fit for the neighborhood.

J.A. DeVos and Sons Inc., owned in part by former Ferrisburgh Selectman John DeVos Jr., is planning to move from the north end of town to a 9-acre parcel on Tuppers Crossing, a half-mile road that runs west from Route 7 to Botsford Road about a half-mile north of Vergennes.

Ferrisburgh resident working to put performances, markets in former Grange

FERRISBURGH — If the dream of one Ferrisburgh resident comes true, the town’s office building and community center will by next summer start hosting a series of monthly performances — and before then host two family-friendly artisans’ markets that will help fund that series.

Resident Kate Yarbrough has already met with the Ferrisburgh selectboard about getting its permission to establish the Grange Series and Grange Markets in the town’s Route 7 landmark, and board members gave her an essentially friendly reception on Nov. 15.

Posted on November 23, 2016 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard at its Nov. 15 meeting was supportive of a proposed series of concerts and markets to be held in the upper story of the town’s office building and community center.

Resident Katherine Yarbrough approached the board with a suggestion for three “Grange Markets” a year — a spring Artisans’ Market, fall Antique Market and a winter Christmas Market — that would fund an ongoing “Grange Series” of arts events, including music, dances, films, readings, lectures and other performances.
