EAST MIDDLEBURY — Maureen Chadsey Williams has developed quite the lengthy résumé. She’s been a baker, a retail worker, a newspaper circulation coordinator and a stay-at-home-mom, to mention a few vocations.

Now, at age 80, the East Middlebury retiree has made a new entry: Author.

Williams recently self-published her first book, titled “The Hollyhocks Will Bloom Again,” depicting the struggles of a persevering young mother trying to hold her household together during the fractious height of Revolutionary War-era America.

EAST MIDDLEBURY — A wayward black bear cub was perched on a tree just off of Route 125 between East Middlebury and Ripton for two days last week.

“It drew a lot of attention,” said Dick Collitt of the Ripton Country Store. “People were stopping. It was a circus down there for a couple of days.”

MIDDLEBURY — East Middlebury residents on Saturday morning will get their first comprehensive look at their new fire station, a 50-foot-by-60-feet building completed within budget and in less than five months.

“This is a very exciting time for the Middlebury Fire Department (MFD),” Lt. Pat Shaw said on Thursday as he opened, with the flick of a switch, the two 14-foot-by14-foot bay doors that will soon accommodate — with plenty of room to spare — the fire apparatus that will continue to protect the East Middlebury community.

East Middlebury residents critical of proposed flood zone

Posted on September 3, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard is seeking some changes in a proposed zoning designation for an area along the Middlebury River following an outcry from East Middlebury residents who contend the new zone will limit development and hurt their property values.

The planning commission began working on the proposed zoning amendments in 2010, following a Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) review by the town’s administration of its flood hazard area regulations under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

What to do about the river?

Posted on June 25, 2012 |
By John Flowers

EAST MIDDLEBURY — John and Theresa Anderson bought their home off Grist Mill Road around seven years ago. Among its many assets: A backyard spacious enough for a horse ring and a border with the Middlebury River.

The river, however, has now become a mixed blessing.

A series of soaking storms — punctuated by Tropical Storm Irene last year — have at times turned the placid river into a raging juggernaut, careening against its banks and spilling into portions of the East Middlebury community.
