Middlebury Police Log: Police look into theft of copper

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police were informed on Jan. 5 of a burglary at a Charles Avenue residence that resulted in the theft of some copper. Investigation continues.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Were informed of the theft of a hunting knife from a Cedar Court residence on Jan. 4.

•  Received a call from a Meadow Way resident about a suspected theft on Jan. 5.

Vergennes Police Log: Pistol left in public restroom

VERGENNES — Between Jan. 4 and 10, Vergennes police dealt with cases that included angry men, car accidents, minor drug cases, and a pistol left in a public rest room.

In those seven days, Vergennes police:

•  On Jan. 4 responded to a minor two-car accident on East Street.

•  On Jan. 5 helped Vermont State Police at the scene of a one-car rollover on Middlebrook Road in Ferrisburgh.

•  On Jan. 5 served a relief-from-abuse order on a city juvenile on behalf of South Burlington police.

Bristol Police Log for November 2015

BRISTOL — Early this past November, Bristol police discovered that a Mount Abraham Union High School student was truant because the family was unable to launder clothes. Police learned that the family could not afford to replace broken appliances and then contacted the Sears store in Middlebury.

The store, without hesitation, offered to provide the family with a new washer and dryer.

Vergennes Police Log: Outstanding warrant lands woman in jail

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Dec. 30 cited a Starksboro woman for passing a bad check and jailed her on an outstanding warrant.

City police allege that Lynn Haskins, 30, in November wrote a $527.78 check on a closed account to Champlain Discount Foods. Store management alerted police on Dec. 16, and they cited Haskins last week for that offense.

Middlebury Police Log: Woman receives citation for alleged assault

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Shawna Thorpe, 34, of Rochester for the alleged assault of a tenant at a North Pleasant Street apartment on Dec. 29.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

• Were informed of the theft of a backpack from an Addison County Transit Resources bus on Dec. 28.

• Responded to a tenant complaint at a North Pleasant Street apartment building on Dec. 28.

Vermont State Police Log: Police clock man driving 118 mph during chase

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police report that an East Middlebury man led authorities on a chase through three Addison County towns early Sunday morning at a speed that topped out at 118 miles per hour.

Police cited Christopher Shores, 21, for excessive speed, driving under the influence, attempting to elude a police officer, grossly careless and negligent driving and reckless endangerment. This followed a high-speed chase that began about 1 a.m. Sunday on Route 116 in Bristol, where Shores was allegedly clocked doing 118 mph in a 50 mph zone.

Vermont State Police Log: Troopers locate driver who crashed car, fled the scene

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police were busy on Christmas Eve.

On Dec. 24 at around 10:22 p.m. state police, along with Vergennes police, responded to Route 7 in Waltham south of South Middlebrook Road for a one-car crash. Witnesses told police that the driver of the 2006 Chevy Cobalt involved in the crash had taken off on foot.

Vergennes Police Log: City police help state police with incidents

VERGENNES — Vergennes police are investigating a string of BB-gun vandalism cases in the New Haven Road and Green Street neighborhood.

Three incidents of BBs being shot through home windows on those city streets were reported last week, and a fourth was reported late the week before.

On March 17, a Green Street resident reported hearing a bang outside his home, but police found nothing. The next day, the man called back to say he had discovered the damage to a window.

Middlebury Police Log: Robbery reported at Court St. Champlain Farms

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a reported robbery at the Champlain Farms store on Court Street on Dec. 22.

As previously reported on addisonindependent.com, a man entered the store at around 7:12 p.m. that Tuesday and demanded money from the cashier. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

He was described as a white male, wearing a black hoodie with a white cloth over his face with eye cutouts.

Middlebury Police Log: Middlebury police handle thefts, assault and other incidents

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Sierra Grimes, 21, of Middlebury on an arrest warrant for an outstanding domestic assault case in the North Pleasant Street area on Dec. 15.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

• Investigated a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian on Seminary Street on Dec. 14. Police said the pedestrian was injured.

• Investigated a report of a child and adult screaming in a Sugarwood Court residence on Dec. 15. Police determined the commotion was caused by a child who was refusing to go to bed.
