ANESU school volunteers must now be fingerprinted

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast School district administrators is alerting the public that there is a new process for all who wish to volunteer in the schools: Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, Beeman and Robinson elementary schools and Mount Abraham Union High School. This applies to anyone who plans to volunteer, chaperone a field trip, or work with students at any point in the school year.

Volunteers complete first segment of Trail Around Bristol

BRISTOL — Bristol residents working to create a trail system around Bristol reported that they’ve completed their first project: extending and improving the cross country trail behind Mount Abraham Union High School.

“We continue to be so impressed by the enthusiasm in the area,” said Porter Knight, the Bristol Recreation Club board member who is spearheading the trails initiative. “We had people from elementary age to their mid-70s helping on the trail. And I had feedback from several people saying it was a ton of fun.

Awe and community unite eclipse viewers; a diverse crowd of young and old gather at Mount Abe

BRISTOL — Monday afternoon in Bristol saw clear skies that were slightly less sunny than usual as a crowd approaching 100 stood next to the Mount Abraham Union High School track, their eyes turned upward.

Spectators of all ages had united at a solar eclipse party to watch the moon gradually block their view of about three-quarters of the sun.

Bristol Police Log: Vandal shoots village residence full of bullet holes

BRISTOL — On Aug. 8, Bristol police responded to reported vandalism at a village residence. The resident alleged that male juveniles had shot numerous holes into the home’s siding. Police are working to identify the suspects.

On Aug. 7, 10 and 13, Bristol police checked security at Mount Abraham Union High School. Officers conducted foot patrols on Main Street and in the surrounding area on Aug. 7, 8, 11 and 13. And between Aug. 7 and Aug. 13, Bristol police processed four fingerprint requests for employment purposes.

Bristol police officers join labor union

BRISTOL — Bristol police are now unionized.

On July 19, Bristol police voted unanimously to join the New England Police Benevolent Association after two NEPBA representatives visited the Bristol Police Department in person and made a presentation about member benefits. The Vermont Labor Relations Board certified the NEPBA as the department’s sole bargaining representative on July 31.

Bristol heroin case nets trio

BRISTOL — Three Bristol residents last week pleaded innocent in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, to heroin trafficking-related charges stemming from a July 16 incident in South Street in Bristol.

Edward James Chaloux, 56; Corrine Louise Cantin, 51; and Derek Anthony Jackson, 49, each face a felony charge of trafficking heroin. Conviction on this charge carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $1 million.

Vermonters raise their voices against bigotry

MIDDLEBURY — Close to 100 people gathered Monday evening in Middlebury for a rally in solidarity with those opposing white nationalists, in response to the weekend’s tragic events in Charlottesville, Va.

“People needed to share their indignation and dismay,” said Ariane van Driel van Wageningen, one of the organizers of the demonstration and a leader with Middlebury Indivisible.

Bristol Police Log: Two jailed after police find them together

BRISTOL — A Bristol police officer’s observation on Aug. 8 of Patrick Cota, 24, of Bristol and Melissa Sird, 35, of Ferrisburgh together at a Bristol business started a chain of police actions.

Police report that their investigation showed that Cota and Sird were under court-ordered conditions of release that prevented each with having contact with the other. On Aug. 9 an officer found Cota at his West Street home and also searched the home and found Sird there. The officer took them both into custody without incident.

Bristol man pleads innocent to sexual assault

BRISTOL — A 24-year-old Bristol man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman at a party at his parents’ home in June.

Tyler Ford pleaded innocent to the sexual assault charge in Addison Superior Court, Criminal Division, on Aug. 7.

The alleged sexual assault took place in the early morning hours of June 25, at a party at Ford’s family home on Lower Notch Road in Bristol. Ford lives with his parents, Suzanne and Glenn Cota.

Bristol police chief turning in badge after 31 years; Gibbs to retire at the end of August

BRISTOL — Had he been just a little bit shorter, longtime Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs might have become an Air Force pilot, but at 6-foot-4 he was too tall to fit in the cockpit by Air Force specs.

Instead his desire to serve his community and — he frankly admits — a love of the adrenalin that comes from being the calm authority figure in an emergency led to 38 years as a policeman, 31 of those with the Bristol Police Department.

Gibbs joined the Bristol police in 1986, and became chief in 1992.
