Bristol springs into the arts this Saturday

BRISTOL — Lily Hinrichsen, Karla VanVliet, Basha Miles, Annie Perkins, Reagh Greenleaf Jr., and Rachel Baird — all Addison County residents — set up shop in the ARTSight Studios and Gallery on South Street in Bristol. It’s a shared office, sort of. Each artist has his or her own space in the old house, which used to be home to the police station and doctors offices. Some of the artists keep regular hours, others by chance or appointment.

Learn about the tradition of Ukranian eggs in Bristol

BRISTOL — Ukrainian decorated eggs, or pysanky, are decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist method. The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, “to write”, as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax. OnSaturday, April 29,from1-3 p.m.,at Art on Main, artist Theresa Somerset of Precision Studio will demonstrate the traditional art of pysanky.

New Mount Abe repair plan to go before voters next year

BRISTOL — The new Renovation Committee has begun work toward formulating a plan to renovate Mount Abraham Union High School.

The committee is charged with determining the needs of the aging facility and with shaping “a potential bond measure to go before voters in the 2017-2018 school year.” It’s been given until August to make a recommendation to ANeSU Superintendent Patrick Reen.

Meet the Chefs: Erin and Sanderson Wheeler from the Bobcat Cafe in Bristol

BRISTOL — f there’s one thing to be said about the owners of Bristol’s Bobcat Cafe, Erin and Sanderson Wheeler, it’s that they have embraced the visions of their elders.

The Bobcat was first owned by Robert Fuller, also a former owner of Burlington’s Leunig’s and Pauline’s in South Burlington. From Fuller, the Wheelers gleaned the idea of “third place.”

Coworking space could foster more business in Bristol

Leaders of the downtown business advocacy group Bristol CORE think so, and they’re reading plans to offer such businesses space that trades some level of privacy for space that is less expensive and may foster collaboration.

Bristol's Aidan May competes at nationals

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School’s Aidan May, winner of the Vermont Brain Bee, participated in USA National Brain Bee Championship last month.

May, a junior at Mt. Abraham Union High School, matched wits in this neuroscience competition with teenagers who were winners from 51 chapters across 30 states. The competition took place at the University of Maryland in Baltimore on March 17-19.

Mount Abe's Bouvier takes an unusual career path

BRISTOL — It’s almost impossible to imagine newly hired Mount Abraham Union High School Assistant Principal Justin Bouvier outside the halls of the school where he’s worked for over a decade and from which he graduated almost 20 years ago.

The 35-year-old Bristol native has built a career out of helping young people — especially those who struggle the most.

But what most teens roaming the halls of MAUHS might not realize is that Bouvier’s own path to success wasn’t always clear or certain.

BRISTOL — Margaret Owen has kept track of the things she’s heard over her 90 years on this Earth.

The Bristol resident took the time to write down some of the old sayings or superstitions that people used to use and some still are used.

Some of them are filled with wisdom, some of them are a little silly. Many of them can make you stop and think.

1. Comb your hair in the dark, you’ll comb sorrow into your heart.

2. Clean hair out of your comb and burn it, or you could lose all your hair.

MAUHS board still seeking new members

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union officials are alerting residents of Bristol, New Haven and Starksboro that there are openings on the Mount Abraham Union High School Board for members from each of those three towns.

Current school members of the local school boards in each own would like candidates interested in filling these spots to step forward by end of day Monday, April 17, so they could fill those openings on Tuesday.
