Group gives kids 'passports' to the great outdoors

ADDISON COUNTY — Do you like spending time outdoors?

Most of us (kids and adults) answer, “Yes!” But when it comes right down to it, we don’t actually spend as much time as we might like outside.

“The statistics show us that about 50 percent of kids today play outside as they did in the ’80s,” sited Andy Paluch, executive director of Come Alive Outside — a non-profit based in Rutland. “There are so many things competing for our attention these days.”

Bristol election ballot boasts one contest

BRISTOL — Residents of Bristol will vote in only one contested election on Town Meeting Day.

Kevin Hanson and Krista Siringo are vying for a three-year spot representing Bristol on the new Mount Abraham Unified School Board. But whomever loses that race will have other options for joining the panel, which governs the combined K-12 schools in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro.

Bristol Police Log: Police cite Winooski man for DUI No. 2

BRISTOL — Bristol police on Jan. 20 cited a Winooski man for driving under the influence of alcohol, second offense, following a traffic stop for defective equipment on Plank Road.

Police allege Christopher R. Grassley, 32, was found to have a blood-alcohol content of 0.105; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.

In other action between Jan. 15 and 21, Bristol police:

•  Assisted a motorist who was locked out of a vehicle.

Author to discuss her book on need to educate girls around the world

BRISTOL — Award-winning author Tanya Lee Stone comes to Bristol on Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 10-11 a.m. at Holley Hall for a free event offered by the One World Library Project to area middle and high school students and members of the community.

Stone will discuss and answer questions about her latest book, “Girl Rising: Changing the World One Girl at a Time,” which examines global barriers to girls’ education.

Vermonters march for their future

MONTPELIER — Though she had to use a step stool to reach the microphone, 16-year-old Greta Solsaa wasn’t fazed by thousands of people gathered below her on the snowy Statehouse lawn this past Saturday.

“Never forget your voice,” the Rutland teen told the crowd at the March For Our Future. “Never forget that we are the future, and we have something to say about it.”

Bristol Police Log: Police still seeking attempted robbery suspect

BRISTOL — Bristol police are still seeking the public’s help in finding out who attempted to rob the National Bank of Middlebury branch office on Main Street on Jan. 13.

As reported in the Jan. 18 Addison Independent, at 11:10 that Saturday morning a woman approximately 5-foot-5 wearing a heavy red checked coat gave the teller a note demanding money but fled on foot before getting anything. The suspect was seen leaving the area in what was described as an older green Subaru Impreza, eastbound on East Street toward Starksboro.

Bristol bakery starts new chapter with new owner

BRISTOL — For almost eight years, Celina Ellison had been a big part of the recipe that has produced sweet success for Bristol Bakery on Main Street. Brothers Kevin and Doug Harper picked Ellison as their “house manager,” a role she would perform at both the original bakery on Bristol’s Main Street and at a Hinesburg spin-off that is also doing very well.

Well, the longtime manager has now become the new owner of the bakery, which she has renamed “Bristol Cliffs Café.”

5 Towns to vote Town Meeting Day on $29.5 million Mount Abe repair bond

BRISTOL — It’s official.

Five-town voters on Town Meeting Day will cast ballots on a revised, $29.5 million renovation plan for Mount Abraham Union High School that would address nine project priorities touted by school officials, albeit to a lesser degree than the $36.6 million proposal that area residents defeated last November.
