5-Town schools seek budget hike

BRISTOL — Voters in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro will be asked to approve a 6.6 percent increase in spending in the 5-Towns school district, or face district staff cuts.

Proposed spending for the Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD) is $30,950,235 for fiscal year 2019–2020. The budget reflects $17,730 in spending per equalized pupil, an increase of 8.2 percent.

Middlebury couple to share trip to Mecca

BRISTOL — This past summer, Farhad and Amtul Khan fulfilled a lifelong dream and a spiritual obligation: they completed their pilgrimage to Mecca. To learn more about their journey, the public is invited to attend “Hajj: A Spiritual Journey” on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Lawrence Memorial Library from 7-8:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by One World Library Project. BURLINGTON — On Feb. 9, students from seven Vermont high schools traveled to the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont in Burlington, to compete in the 10th Annual Vermont Brain Bee (VBB). Forty-eight students — hailing from Burlington (BHS), Essex (EHS), Rice, South Burlington and Middlebury (MUHS), Mount Abraham (Mount Abe), and Champlain Valley union high schools — tested their knowledge of the brain, nervous system and science as a whole.

Lawmakers join effort to ban plastics

BRISTOL — Several Addison County lawmakers on Monday said they’ll back legislation aimed at removing single-use plastic products — such as shopping bags — from Vermont’s waste stream.

Bills like H.74 — which proposes to prohibit food service establishments from providing carryout bags, expanded polystyrene food service products, and plastic straws to customers — drew considerable debate at a legislative breakfast at the Bristol American Legion post on Airport Road.

Decaying water pipes plague Mount Abe

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School’s aging innards continue to occupy school district officials with emergency repairs.

In January, several square feet of ceramic tile fell off the walls of the downstairs boys’ shower room, the result of leaky water pipes. Testing came back negative for asbestos, but positive for mold.

Abortion foes offer feedback on bill H.57

BRISTOL — As was the case at last week’s Legislative Breakfast, abortion legislation was a hot topic at this Monday’s Legislative Breakfast in Bristol.

Folks weighed in on H.57, a bill that would recognize reproductive choice as a “fundamental freedom” and would keep public entities from interfering with, or restricting, a woman’s right to end her pregnancy.
