Deb Brisson and Hay Burners return to Brandon

Led by Brisson’s powerful, expressive vocals, this group of veteran Addison County performers offers music that is real and heartfelt, from soulful and bluesy to rocking alt-country. With an album of original songs, “Heart-Shaped Stone,” to its credit, the band mixes its own work with favorite covers by artists such as Natalie Merchant, Amy Winehouse, Ryan Adams, Slim Harpo, the Talking Heads and more.

Judge joins local organization that deals with imprisoned parents

BRANDON — The Safer Society Foundation has announced the addition of Judge William K. Sessions III to the nonprofit’s Board of Directors. Sessions, a Cornwall resident, is a noted jurist and is currently a Senior U.S. District Judge for the District of Vermont.

Merger of Whiting, Leicester Sudbury schools put to vote

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Unified Union School Board has approved a proposed 2018-19 school budget that would combine the district’s three small schools — Leicester Central, Whiting Elementary and Sudbury Country schools — and move the Caverly Preschool to Lothrop Elementary in Pittsford.

The proposed $19,223,835 spending plan, approved at a Jan. 10 meeting, represents a roughly $550,000 cut in spending, or 1.22 percent, from the current budget.

Couple to give new life to defunct old ski area in Brandon

BRANDON/HUBBARDTON — The former High Pond Mountain Ski Area that straddles the Brandon-Hubbardton town line is getting a facelift, thanks to a high-end restoration by new owners Peter and Karen Dartley.

Work began in earnest almost immediately after the couple bought the 330-acre parcel for $1.3 million in 2016.

The McKernon Group of Brandon, led by Kevin Birchmore, was hired to do the construction, and Selin and Selin Architecture in Shelburne did all of the design work.

The link takes readers to a page arranged alphabetically by state. The Brandon blurb appears under “Vermont” and a photo of Neshobe Falls on Center Street, and gives a shout out to a popular local greenhouse.

OVUU board advises against merger of Neshobe, Lothrop schools

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Unified Union School Board’s Finance Committee has recommended that the district abandon the idea of merging the Neshobe and Lothrop elementary schools.

Rutland Northeast Superintendent Jeanne Collins said in an interview Monday that the committee made its recommendation at a regular meeting on Dec. 6.

RNESU reaches contract agreement: Negotiations with paras, drivers conclude over a year after impasse

BRANDON — Both sides approved the terms of a long-awaited contract for Rutland Northeast paraeducators and bus drivers last week.

The Rutland Northeast Paraprofessional and Bus Driver’s Association membership voted to approve the terms at a meeting on Dec. 4, and the Rutland Northeast and Otter Valley Unified Union School Boards approved the contract on Dec. 5.

Safer Society receives grant to improve programs

Lothrop-Neshobe merger panned: OVUSD explores options to address $1.6 million shortfall

BRANDON — If a vote on whether to merge Lothrop and Neshobe elementary schools were conducted at the gym where a recent public forum was held, the result would likely be a resounding “No.”

The idea, which would send kindergarten through third-grade students to one school and fourth- through sixth-graders to the other, is one of two “Big Ideas” that were discussed at two public meetings in the Otter Valley Unified School District in the last week.

Otter Valley to accept students from China

BRANDON — After years of working on cultural exchange with China, Otter Valley Union High School Principal Jim Avery ushered in an era of official partnership with the Vermont International Academy this past Tuesday.

Avery announced a formal agreement with VIA in Shanghai under which OV will accept students on a yearly basis from that Chinese city.
