Hannaford offers free auto safety checks

ADDISON COUNTY — The Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center Auto Class will provide a free, 29-point vehicle safety check or a reasonably-priced oil change on Thursday, Sept. 24, in conjunction with the United Way Days of Caring.

Arts Beat for Sept. 21: World-class musicians to perform tango in Brandon

Astor Piazzolla is the single most important figure in the history of tango. His innovative style, which came to be known as Nueva Tango, renewed the tango tradition. A unique group of Vermont musicians will come together to present Piazzolla’s tangos at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater.

The Piazzolla Project brings together the talents of four world-class musicians to explore the surprising and always passionate sounds of the Argentinean composer. Two husband-and-wife duos joined forces to establish the Piazzolla Project.

Lawmaker fields questions on school consolidation act

LINCOLN — Community members brought questions straight to the source last week, when the Lincoln Community School Board hosted a question-and-answer session on the new Vermont law encouraging school consolidation with a lawmaker who helped shepherd Act 46 through the Legislature.

“We thought that a community forum on an important piece of legislation like this is always just a good starting point for any community going through changes,” said Rebecca Otey, Lincoln Community School Board chair.

ACTR bus company cruises past 2 million mark in riders

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) has just eclipsed the 2 millionth rider mark, a substantial achievement for a non-profit organization that got its start 23 years ago coordinating individual rides for transportation-challenged residents.

Walkers, get ready for Woofstock

MIDDLEBURY — Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society, is hosting Woofstock: Walk for the Animals, on Saturday, Sept. 19. This is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Memorial Sports Center in Middlebury. The 2-mile walk begins at 10:30 a.m. Dogs are invited and encouraged to participate. The event will culminate with a 40th birthday party for the shelter, complete with cupcakes, party favors and music.

Interfaith group to share thoughts on a moral economy

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Interfaith Action will host a statewide series of discussions titled “Building Vermont’s Moral Economy.” Public Assets Institute will co-sponsor the series and provide a presentation at each event. One of those discussions will be held in Middlebury on Friday, Sept. 25, from 8-9:30 am. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 3 Main St.

Purcell opera to play at Town Hall Theater

MIDDLEBURY — Opera Company of Middlebury will present one of the glories of English music, “Dido and Aeneas” by Henry Purcell, in three semi-staged concert performances at the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury the weekend of Oct. 16.

This will be the first time Opera Company of Middlebury (OCM) will present a Baroque opera. “Dido and Aeneas” premiered in 1689 and is generally considered the first great English opera.

Special education offering faces big changes at same time that it receives big kudos

MIDDLEBURY — You’ll have to excuse educators with the county’s Diversified Occupations (D.O.) program if they are a little perplexed these days.

On the one hand, the Vermont Public Broadcasting Service has just hailed D.O. as one of four exemplary “champions” of education in Vermont for 2015, an honor that will include an award and a televised tribute during the month of September.

ACSU outlines its educational road map for the next five years

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) officials on Tuesday unveiled a first-ever strategic plan for Middlebury-area schools, a document that outlines expectations for student achievement during the next five years along with measurement standards to see if the plan’s goals have been met.

“It’s not just about student test scores,” ACSU Superintendent Peter Burrows said of the plan and the future of the educational system.

“It’s about the whole student.”

Historic schooner replica Lois McClure heads in to drylock

FERRISBURGH — On Aug. 24, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s schooner Lois McClure left her home port on a very important mission — getting ship-shape in anticipation of her 12th year of operation.

Her destination was the New York State Canal Corporation shipyard at Waterford, N.Y., where a team of shipwrights working with David Short of North Atlantic Shipbuilding and Repair, of West Montville, Maine, will replace any worn, damaged or rotted planking and timbers and recaulk seams.
